You’ve been here before…You remember… It’s the place your so happy to see after a long night on the town. It’s the only place that was open at 2 am on a Wednesday night. It’s the place Anthony Bourdain famously declared Top 3 in the world on his show, The Layover. This place makes you forget AND brings you back to reality. It feels like home. Since 1970, Mike Shawa has been called Sam, after his uncle who first opened the burger counter in 1966. Mike Shawa passed away at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife Marwa and 3 sons, Fadi, Hani, and Emad. Mike gave his life to the North Beach and his legacy will always live through the neighborhood. Sam’s will always be there to remind everyone of his wisdom and his grace.

Pizza, Italian subs & a range of pasta dishes are available at this unassuming eatery.

a 3% fee. The place is dirty, the bathrooms haven’t been cleaned for several days, no soap, everything dirty and poorly maintained.
The burger is nothing special, the bun is store-bought, the meat is very simple and only gets flavor from the charcoal. The fries are good, but very simple, nothing extraordinary. We were eating and a mouse ran into the place going to its home, which confirmed to us that the place has low hygiene standards.
The food is average, and if someone said it was the third best burger in the world, it’s because they had only eaten at three places.

I don’t recommend it.

Simplicity always makes a customer happy. Sam’s Burgers is an old-fashioned, no-frills restaurant in the heart of San Francisco, and we loved it!

We ordered cheeseburgers and fish & chips—both were tasty and satisfying. What surprised us most was that the same person was the cashier, chef, and server! Even with that, the service was quick and friendly.

If you’re looking for a simple, classic spot with good food and a local vibe, Sam’s is worth a visit.

Thanks Anthony Bourdain and RIP. We tried the burgers last night. The burgers were delicious. The fries were good but the onion rings (sorry no pic of onion rings) were excellent.
It was a great night in North Beach and we sat outside the restaurant. It’s a tiny cute and cozy old school spot.

Sam’s Cheeseburger — famously known as Anthony Bourdain’s favorite in San Francisco — did not disappoint. No frills, no fancy toppings, just a perfectly executed classic in its purest form. Simple, honest, and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend as a late-night stop when you’re in the city. ✨

Five stars aren’t enough – where’s the six-star button?
Listen, I’ve had burgers before. I thought I knew what a burger was. Turns out I’ve been eating lies wrapped in buns my entire life until I stumbled into Sam’s.
The burger here is so good, I briefly considered proposing to it. My actual partner sitting across from me understood completely. They were having the same internal debate.
The patty? Juicy enough that I’m pretty sure it violates at least one law of physics. The bun? Holds everything together like it’s getting paid overtime. The toppings? Perfectly balanced, as all things should be (yes, I’m quoting Thanos about a burger – it’s THAT serious).
I walked in hungry and left as a changed person. I now divide my life into two eras: Before Sam’s Burger and After Sam’s Burger. BSB and ASB, if you will.
Also, the location in North Beach means you can walk off approximately 3% of the calories afterward while pretending you’re a tourist. Win-win.
Bottom line: If you don’t eat here, you’re only hurting yourself. Five stars. Would give six if Google allowed it. Will be back tomorrow. And the day after. Please send help (actually don’t, I’m fine here).

About room for 10 people total to sit. Great detour during a night out on the town. Food, service and atmosphere were amazing.

Get the special…great cheeseburger, crispy hot fries and a soda. Even better is the service. Small indoor area but seating outside, North beach to your left and Chinatown to the right. Many food options, no pizza for years now. Also own the Cafe and pastry shop next door.

I have been coming here since I was a kid. I remember when the owner was still around he would greet me all the time when I was around. The smoke while they grill the burgers is probably what draws most customer to make a visit here. The burgers are made from scratch and made to order right in front of you. The fries are well seasoned and also made to order. The only acceptable cash so make sure you have some cash when coming by. This is probably one of the few original burger joints remaining in the city. I enjoy coming here because it’s not one of these hyped up places and the food is really great. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting San Francisco, love to eat or if you are just in the area, you will be satisfied. Definitely will be back!

Let me start with this: I don’t like leaving negative reviews. But I had to get this one off my chest.

They say wine gets better with age; Sam’s burgers evidently does not. Don’t be fooled, this place is not good. All the Anthony Bourdain reputation is very outdated.

We got soggy fries, burnt onion rings, overpriced burgers, and unattentive service. I ordered the combo which should come with a drink but I never got one. The customer next to me kept rolling cigarettes at the counter, which was sticky from previous customers…

It would be acceptable if the food was cheap, but it wasn’t. I would not recommend coming here
