Sam Oh Jung — Solid Korean Comfort Food, Without the Spark

Rating: (3/5)

Sam Oh Jung is the kind of neighborhood Korean restaurant that delivers reliability over excitement. It’s small, often busy, and clearly well-liked by locals. While everything I ordered was enjoyable, nothing quite rose to the level of memorable. This was a good meal — just not a standout one.

Ambiance – 3/5
The restaurant is compact and modest, with a casual, no-frills atmosphere typical of many traditional Korean eateries. It was fairly busy during our visit, which speaks to its steady local following. However, the space itself is functional rather than inviting — a place to eat well, not necessarily to linger.

Authenticity – 4/5
Sam Oh Jung stays true to classic Korean flavors. The menu features staples you would expect: seafood pancake, kimchi tofu soup, and galbi. The preparation felt traditional and straightforward, without modern twists or reinvention.

Flavor – 3/5
The seafood pancake was the highlight — crisp on the outside and filled generously, though slightly on the greasy side. The kimchi tofu soup was comforting but lacked depth; it delivered warmth without complexity. The short rib galbi was well-prepared with a good meat-to-fat ratio, not overly greasy and properly seasoned. Everything tasted good — but nothing left a lasting impression.

Service – 3/5
Service was efficient and appropriate for a busy, small Korean restaurant. Nothing exceptional, nothing problematic — simply adequate and functional.

Cost – 4/5
Portions were generous, and pricing felt fair for the quality and quantity served. You leave full, which always counts for something.

Final Thoughts
Sam Oh Jung is dependable, authentic, and satisfying — but not extraordinary. It’s a safe choice for Korean comfort food, especially if you’re nearby, though not a destination restaurant. A solid 3 out of 5 stars — good, just not memorable.

They have a new menu and maybe new chef? I already liked it before but it’s even better now! The stone pot bibimbap was perfect – crispy rice and fresh not mushy vegetables. The cabbage and short rib soup was delicious and meat slid right off the bone. Well-seasoned and balanced banchan. And 10/10 service from Micah.

My favorite Korean restaurant near home has delicious pork belly. The Korean pizza is loaded with toppings and tastes better than other places. The auntie who serves is always cheerful, making it feel like having a meal cooked by your mom.

The only downside is that the prices are gradually increasing.

Tonight I got this menu that was enough to be two meals for three people for less than $50. I called them at 10:30 which was 29 minutes before their closing time, but they accepted my order even after they closed their counter. I honestly did not expect much that they would do so. This has been my go to place for Korean food for two years. The food and the service has been great for me every time whether I dine in or take out.

Amazing food every time we visit. There are a lot of Korean restaurants in Seattle, but this place is one of the few places where I keep going back to. I tried something new whenever I visit, and every thing tastes great.

Delicious food and friendly service! For appetizers, my friend and I ordered the vegetable pancake to share. It was steaming hot, crispy, large enough for us to share and have leftovers. I ordered the stone pot bibimbap with tofu. The bibimbap had lots of fresh veggies, perfectly cooked sunny side up egg, and crackling rice at the bottom. They give you tons of fresh banchan too!

A nice cozy Korean restaurant. Got the bossam, raw crab and mandu. The sides were all good and the main dishes were solid. Will be back to try more of their menu.

Friendly service, can be a bit of a wait during rush hours. Been here several times and the cold noodles (both spicy and not spicy) consistently hit the spot. We tried the raw marinated crab last time and were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and its quality. A bit $$.

Not impressed. Got the beef bibimbap. Beef had zero seasoning, tiny portion of the protein and overall small main. 2 sides were kimchi. Overall lacking in flavor and will be going back to hosoonyi for this dish. Definitely not a $20 plate. Parking is also angle in And directionally you need to enter from the north side to park adequately.
