FIVE STARS to the crew at Sam Jones BBQ in downtown Raleigh! We loved our North Carolina barbecue pork plates, complete with mac ’n cheese, collard greens, fresh fruit, and sweet cornbread. The sweet BBQ sauce was fantastic (vinegar sauce also available). Sadly, we were too full to try their famous banana pudding — definitely next time! Indoor and outdoor seating are available, along with takeout. Onsite and street parking make it easy to visit.

Chicken is juicy with a tiny spicy and sweet mixed flavor on skin, brisket is tender and perfect to pair with BBQ sauce which is a bit sweeter. Rib is great as well, on a sweet side of flavor, tender as well, unfortunately it’s served not as hot as expected which may be a loss of a premium flavor. Pulled pork is savory, love it. Only drawback is the cornbread, supposed to be more fluffy. Overall, our family enjoyed this meal, and portion is great.

Portions were huge and the food came out very fast. You will definitely enjoy the Mac and cheese, ribs, and catfish nuggets. Very fresh food and the sweet bbq sauce pairs perfect with everything. Not a fan of the cornbread, beans, and sweet potato muffin was okay. Everything else was really good!

Perfect place to try North Carolina barbecue when you’re in Raleigh!

We tried turkey meat, chicken tenders, pulled pork and ribs..
ribs are the best among the meat choices. The desert banana pudding and chocolate eclairs dosa not fit our taste buds though.. we have better ones from other barbecue places. Warning with the corn bread.. they are hard as rock

Sam Jones BBQ – 4/5 Stars

Really good BBQ with great flavor and quality—definitely worth trying if you’re in the area. The food was delicious, but unfortunately they got the order wrong, which was a bit disappointing.

Still, the taste and overall experience were solid enough to give it 4 stars. With a bit more attention to accuracy, it could easily be a perfect visit.

These ribs had a nice salty goodness and they were perfectly cooked. Not mushy and not hard to chew. The chicken was so delicious as well. The cornbread is unique and hard to describe. Not sweet and the edges had almost a fried texture. The edges were so tasty and would be perfect warm with butter and maple syrup.

Order at the counter when you arrive, and they bring your food out to your table once it’s ready. Hardly any wait time the night we were there and service was fast and friendly. The pulled chicken sandwich was terrific, and loved the sweet slaw side. Others had the ribs and pulled pork, both got thumbs up, as did the baked beans side. Their BBQ sauce was really good. Very casual atmosphere.

Visited Sam Jones BBQ in downtown Raleigh and was pleasantly surprised!

As someone from Eastern NC, I’m usually skeptical of BBQ spots because too many places try to put a “flare” on it. If you know Eastern NC BBQ, you know all you need is to cook it low and slow with a good vinegar-based sauce.

As an Offline member, I decided to give it a try—and I tell you what, I’ll be back again and again! The BBQ was chopped perfectly and packed with flavor. Their house sweet sauce was delicious, and the vinegar sauce was just as good. They even had Texas Pete on the table, the music was right, and the sweet tea tasted like it had a whole bag of sugar in it… just like an old school BBQ joint.

Side note: the baked beans were next-level—loaded with hamburger meat and onions, just like something you’d get at a backyard cookout. And let’s not forget the slaw! It’s rare to find really good slaw, especially on a sandwich, but theirs was spot on.

Ordering is done at the bar, and the service was amazing! I went at lunch when it wasn’t busy, and the staff was friendly, the restaurant was spotless, and my food was out before I even sat down.

This spot is the real deal. I’ll definitely be back!

What an utter disappointment I’ve been looking forward to this place for over a year now. My wife and I both ordered the chopped barbecue platter, the barbecue was flavorless and dry no smoke flavor no oak and I found one piece of crispy skin in my platter, wife had zero, my wife and I were trying to figure out how they screwed this up it was a giant pile of Oak outside and there was Zero smoke flavor to this barbecue. it was like it was cooked in an oven somewhere with no smoke at all. One of the pit guys kept staring at me like I was about to post a review, and he knew he wasn’t going to be happy with my review. As far as the atmosphere goes this place reminds me of a low-budget Mission BBQ it’s set up pretty much the same way. Definitely not worth a return trip or the two and a half hour drive each direction from Chesapeake Va, we made for just this occasion I’d have been better off staying in Chesapeake Virginia and going to Mission BBQ, the other major disappointment was they have a really large stamped metal sign from Shiner Bock behind the bar, but they don’t serve Shiner Bock in the restaurant that’s quite the TEASE.
Perhaps I didn’t understand the ordering concept that if you wanted the crispy skin in the barbecue you were supposed to order it, the mac and cheese wasn’t all that great the black eyed peas with the tomatoes in it should have been a whole lot sweeter ir smokey, thank God the fries were fresh cut that was one of two saving Graces of this 5-hour trip but then again I can make fresh cut fries at home.
The other Saving Grace was a sweet potato muffins, I don’t know how y’all don’t apply that logic to the cornbread, whatever prison y’all got that cornbread recipe from I’d revoke its Parloe. There is a sign on the wall calling it the most controversial cornbread in the state of North Carolina, you are correct the controversy is what prison did it come from. It took my chickens 3 days to eat that piece.

I have to be honest, after reading the positive reviews, I had high expectations.. unfortunately, they were not fulfilled. The cornbread was absolutely horrible in my opinion. It reminded me of 4 day old pizza reheated in a microwave. It was so dry. I did enjoy the coleslaw, the Mac and cheese and chips weren’t anything spectacular, same with the pulled pork.
