Unfussy hangout for gumbo, po’ boys & other Louisiana eats in kitschy digs with patio tables.

Can you believe they charged me 25 dollars for this ? I should have looked it over carefully before I left.. Sal’s Gumbo Shack!! You ever go somewhere and it’s so disappointing you almost can’t even talk about it? Ugh!! 25 dollars for two legs and 1/2 of what I think is a breast, but it’s really just a 1/2 breast with 2 pieces of skin layered one on top of the other.. That is an intentional rip off.. The greens were so bitter with vinegar they were inedible and the rice and beans were so dry I couldn’t get them off the spoon.. I’ve had some shitty meals before, but this one is now like top 5.. It’s so weird because a few weeks ago I had some decent wings.. but that’s all I had.. The wings were like 15 bucks for 3 wings so I thought the meal would be a better value.. WRONG! Well, lesson learned.. A few years back I had some of their Gumbo at a different location and I swore it off then, but I’m always down for second chances.. It’s sad to me because a legit soul food place is just the right thing for NLB .. DD

When you come to support a black business, and of course everything is crazy expensive. I dont get why its like that. Most places at least give you good portions though.
Here…
Yeah no, more broth/water than anything else.
You can’t even write a review without the owner and having so much time in her hands to check everyone else pages and negative reviews. Of course, there will always be more negatives than praises. Welcome to reality, you reap what you sow. You give the energy an get it right back. Not everyone “is hating on you.” Get over yourself. Put your energy into your food, it goes a long way.

Absolutely delicious!I have never had this style of food in my life and it was absolutely wonderful. The place was great I didn’t think they expected us to dine in, but the staff was still welcoming. Most of the customers I noticed got to go plates. But this is a cute last min place to grab a hearty filling meal. A customer told me it is authentic as Louisiana cooking! I Ordered a small gumbo that was indeed filling on its own, fried pickles, okra, and was ready to get dessert if my pants didn’t constrict me! The portions were plenty and worth the price. I hope to return soon and order the biggest size of gumbo they have

LOUISIANA USA (via Eat the World Los Angeles) – With the recent opening of a second location in Bixby Knolls, it was time to revisit the original Long Beach Blvd. Sal’s Gumbo Shack, which is now 11 years old. The corner spot got an exterior facelift in 2017, but the delicious Louisiana cooking coming out of the kitchen has remained top notch. While prices have risen quite a bit like most of the industry, dishes from The Big Easy and its wider area are still worth coming here for, especially the namesake gumbo and jambalaya.

I’ve been here before many times. However this time I wanted to order something different. The salmon croquettes. The croquettes were not fresh very dry and had egg shells in them the worst I ever had. The cornbread was rough and old. The banana pudding i ordered was not fresh. Giving customers food that isn’t fresh is a health hazard if you’re unable to make certain items fresh everyday the simple solution would be to take said items off the menu. I am very disappointed at what I received. Lastly, why are the greens sweet? Have you guys ever traveled to Louisiana? Because being creole and not knowing how to cook is a disgrace and embarrassment. As someone who has been here before I am disappointed. If you want to keep your reputation good make the food fresh and don’t give your customers old dry croquettes with eggs and corn meal coming out. Banana pudding isn’t difficult to make and isn’t time consuming all of these items should be prepared fresh. Most likely won’t return.

The food was by no means bad. I just prefer my gumbo to have more flavor/spiciness. The turkey wings were fine. We waited 30+ minutes for our order so, I definitely recommend calling ahead.

This place is special. The food did NOT disappoint. I had the Rex poboy ( catfish and shrimp) greens and onion rings. While I was waiting for my order, I had a delightful conversation with 6 year old Bentlee and 8 year old Navee. They were very polite, respectful girls that served me water and said,’You’re going to enjoy your meal, Ma’am.’ And that I did! I will definitely be going back.

I ordered their sandwich with fries. The fries were dry & stale. The sandwich was too moist. I recommend nobody comes here. My girlfriend order gumbo to-go, they didn’t close the lid when bagged. The gumbo partially spilled. Way too pricey for how subpar the food is.
