Sakai is truly a standout Japanese restaurant.
Chef/owner John is incredibly talented — it honestly makes you wonder if there’s another chef in Ontario who performs at this level.
His professionalism, pride in his craft, and genuine care for each guest really come through in every detail.
You can feel that every dish is prepared thoughtfully, with the customer in mind, not just the food.

Perfect sashimi across the board.
The tuna belly was rich, fatty, and beautifully balanced, the uni was incredibly fresh—just like the ones I had in Japan—and the salmon roe wasn’t overly salty, bursting with flavor and that satisfying pop that made every bite both delicious and fun.

An exceptional dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended.

It was a nice cozy spot but food was not that great. We ordered bibimpop but the side and misso soup arrived minutes after. It really had a minimal amount of meat in it. Sushi salmon set was okay but Rocky Mountain set had weird taste of watery sauce. Not sure if I go retry it.

Some of the best sushi you’ll find outside of Japan. The chefs are exceptionally skilled, led by chef-owner John, whose craftsmanship shines in every bite. The toro, hotate, hamachi, and foie gras sushi were outstanding, each piece perfectly balanced and full of flavor. I can’t wait to go back and try the uni, wagyu, and the Korean dishes on the menu.

Had my birthday dinner here, I usually do an omakase in Toronto but decided to scale it back this year and I was not disappointed. This is by far the best sushi I’ve outside of downtown Toronto. The rice was amazingly seasoned and the cuts of fish were perfectly prepared. We had a big party of 16 people and the service was still amazing. As a sushi enthusiast I felt compelled to seek out the chef’s behind the counter to commend them on their preparation of the sushi and in doing so I met the owner who was extremely humble and I can tell they are a gem in the community. I now have a new go to sushi spot!

I went 2 times for dinner. At first the restaurant looked modest from outside. Until I got in, there were a lot of rewards & info on the newspaper. The pricing seemed a little steep. But when I saw the presentation & took my first bite, it was the moment I knew, why it was popular. Food tastes so fresh off the boat (get it ❤️) and don’t be fool by a small container, it packs a bunch! Great things come from small package, they say.

And the service, how do I say it, these lady are so hard working & warm. They packed the unagi rice for me like a work of art. The second time I came, they recognized me. Their customer service is something that is precious & rare.
The restaurant has an ambiance that I like, which is cozy & serene.

A quaint Japanese restaurant with delicious sushi and friendly staff. We had a medium sushi and shami platter with warm miso soup and the Yaki.

Ventured to GTA west yesterday to buy something off of FB Marketplace and decided to see what Burlington had to offer by way of Asian food. We thoroughly enjoyed a late lunch/early dinner at Sakai. We arrived at 4:30pm – optimal time before the dinner rush! We dined Omakase-style and were greeted by dish after dish of deliciousness. We began with tuna tataki, kalbi, and steak tartar – great balance of flavours, textures, and temperatures. It wasn’t until we got to the sushi that I had the presence of mind to snap some photos – pulled out my phone because I was impressed by the details and presentation. Sadly, I didn’t snap a pic of our Hokkaido scallops or ebi (shrimp). Best I’ve ever had. I would have taken more pics but my usually-fussy about food 17-year old was actually impatient to get to each next bite. That alone speaks for itself! We finished our meal with crème brûlée – delicate and just the perfect amount of sweet. Thanks to John and his family, and amazing team for a meal to remember.

Absolutely outstanding. I think I might have mentioned other good sushi places in the GTA but this tops them all. Everything was perfect. Sushi was exceptional, especially the tuna (which lacks quality in most places). Staff are very warm and attentive to detail.

Will surely be back to this place many many times. Can’t wait to try more menu items

A Hidden Gem in Burlington for Sushi Lovers Seeking True Quality

If you’re searching for exceptional Japanese cuisine in Burlington, Sakai Japanese and Korean Cuisine is a standout that deserves your attention. This is not your average sushi spot—it’s a rare find where traditional craftsmanship meets modern flair.

The sashimi and sushi here are of truly high quality—fresh, expertly cut, and plated with precision. Whether you prefer time-honored nigiri or more creative rolls with a modern twist, every dish is beautifully balanced and deeply satisfying. The chef’s talent shines through in every bite, and it’s clear that the ingredients are chosen with care and intention.

What also sets Sakai apart is the warm hospitality. The chef is not only highly skilled but also incredibly friendly and kind—he often engages with guests, offering suggestions or a warm smile that makes the experience feel personal and memorable.

This is the kind of restaurant you hope to discover: tucked away, authentic, and quietly excellent. If you’re in the Burlington or Halton region and appreciate high-end Japanese cuisine, Sakai is absolutely worth a visit.

I haven’t been here for at least 15 years. I totally forgot about. Sushi was so fresh, the tempura veggies absolutely delish and the green tea was to die for. The service was excellent and the restaurant had a warm vibe to it We plan to go more often. I highly recommend it!
