It’s not that it isn’t a nice building or environment, or not a nice location. It’s that it’s very expensive for what you get. And because Wayzata residents probably don’t care much about how much they are charged for things…I’m sure the owners don’t care that it’s an expensive spot.
But I spent $57 (excluding a 15% tip given for counter service) on a breakfast for two and everything was just middling. The coffee and latte were small and average (and expensive). The two breakfast sandwiches were runny and slimey…impossible to eat without using a dozen of their coarse napkins. The chocolate croissant concealed its chocolate while the cinnamon roll was literally hard as a rock and Indiana Jones might have been the only adventurer to find the golden soft cinnamon center.
And the room was packed…SRO. It was uncomfortable waiting for the order to arrive…and uncomfortable, tight seating if you could even find a place to sit. I’m sure this will be resolved in the summer when outside seating becomes available. It didn’t help that the manager tied up one of the seats with his laptop discreetly watching the action.
And the line was long but it did move efficiently. You were able to view most of their offerings behind a glass case. The gentleman behind the counter asked nobody in particular if anybody had an order he could start on so I piped up and asked for two breakfast sandwiches. I knew I was in trouble when he rolled his eyes and told me that he couldn’t prep breakfast sandwiches but only baked goods and other sandwiches…just like he already said out loud. I slunk back into line with my head held low embarrassed at my mistake.
But the water was great! It was cold and fresh and was a self-service spigot with dozens of larger clear plastic cups. Unfortunately you had to get through a half-dozen people waiting for their orders to come up in order to get there…but it was well worth the trip.
I’m going back to see what they offer during off-hours and correctly order breakfast sandwiches with scrambled eggs rather than eggs over easy. And I might even ponder getting a slice of the small $89 chocolate cake (!).
Their coffee drinks have a more mild flavor, but the ingredients are high quality. The store has lots of tables and seating, though it’s tight for standing space if you’re opting for to-go. The staff are kind and quick.
I also grabbed a pumpkin spice latte, which was decent and definitely gave off those cozy fall vibes, though it wasn’t the star of the show compared to that incredible bagel. Still, between the friendly service, relaxed vibe, and beautifully made food, Rustica is the kind of place you’ll want to revisit—whether it’s for a quiet coffee moment or to treat yourself to something freshly baked and delicious.
