The lasagna was like a sweet flat pasta. It is more unique than yummy. The burger was “the best I’ve ever had” according to my friend. It is on the soggier side, but I don’t mind getting my hands dirty. I loved the triple cooked thicker fries.
Lastly, the creme brûlée came out warm. It gave off sweet queso vibes. The cookies didn’t do much to help the “cheesecake-ness” of the dessert. I thought the high butter content in the shortbread didn’t go well with the cheese in the creme brûlée. This was more of a unique thing rather than yummy.
However, the rest of the menu (jidori egg, burger, pasta) was just ok. The burger is hyped up (in my opinion) and the triple cooked fries were too hard for my liking.
Given the price point and the added 6.5% SF Mandate charge, it simply wasn’t worth it for us.
Highlights for us were:
Crudo – Delicious. Bright Vietnamese or Thai chili sauce brings vibrant acidity and gives a depth to the dish.
Cesar salad – Deceptively simple. Wonderful textures, perfectly seasoned and a fun presentation. The dressing here is the start of the show. So light and delicious. It’s a beautiful creamy foundation for the sweet shinko pear and bitter endive.
Steak – A gorgeous steak. Wonderful cook, incredible sauce and the millefoglie potato was incredible.
Service was seamless and friendly, a huge feather in their cap given this was just their 3rd day of service!
I expect these guys will only continue to dial this place in even further as they go. Strongly recommend.
The crudo tasted like it was missing salt/soy sauce or something, just tasted mildly fishy and wasn’t very flavorful.
The trout was cooked very well, but we found the tartar sauce with pomegranates to be a strange flavor pairing that left us confused.
The cauliflower was fine, the green Thai curry sauce was great, but it felt like a very small portion for the price ($18).
Our favorite dish was the chocolate cake which was very moist and almost brownie/flourless chocolate cake consistency. We both loved the crunchy cacao nibs and ice cream. Felt it was very expensive for the size again ($16). Hopefully we just had some misses, hoping to return in a few months and will update my review when we do.
The Rich team have done it again with a restaurant that just works. Their RT burger is not so quietly a contender for the best burger in SF. The beef is the true star you actually taste, and not a temporal gimmick like the smash burgers we see popping up everywhere. The chocolate cake with ice cream (real vanilla bean, obviously) was more brownie texture than cake and that’s a huge W coming from a (dry, overly sweet) cake hater.
Service was enthusiastic, decor was refined but not stuffy, and the menu was composed with some killer drinks.
RT Bistro isn’t trying to make a statement, it’s just confident. It’s muscle memory. And we are all the better for it.
All 3 dishes I got I highly recommend:
– Oyster (comes w vinegar/shiso topping)
– Hamachi crudo
– Burger (hopefully they reduce the size of their homemade bun)
Will keep you posted (aka update this review) as I come here more.
Ordered the caviar doughnuts, jidori egg, tempura sweet potato dish and 2 entrees in pork cheek and fish. For dessert we got a creme brunette cheesecake.
Everything was delicious and the service was great. Had a bit of a wait despite having a reservation since opening diners were enjoying themselves and took a bit longer. They noticed and offered us cocktails to sip while we waited. Cocktails are a must order here everything is always good, uniquely named and some of the best around SF. Prices were the same as RT and usually get close to $300 with drinks, luxe items like truffle/caviar.
I’ll be back for less formal more casual dining and to try thr burger. Felt like I was at home which was nice but hard not to compare to Rich Table which I prefer the atmosphere, energy and FOH staff moreso.
Still working out the kinks on a relatively busy Tuesday night.
Service felt slightly rushed. 3 appetizers all came out at the same time, and before cocktails arrived.
Ordered an $18 glass of wine before main courses from a sommelier who never showed up. Our server was very apologetic when we mentioned it but I was surprised to not get anything comped or discounted on the bill. We maybe got a tiny chocolate with dessert as an apology but it was hard to tell. I think we also got charged tax on the service fee which isnt ideal.
Agree with other reviews that the burger is good but way over hyped. It was the only thing I had heard about on the menu and it was probably the weakest fish.
Fairly loud and the tables are very close together. Someone’s butt touched our food when they got up to use the toilet.
All in all I would rather spend slightly more and have a better experience next door at Rich Table.
