The food was good. We were seated outdoors and the space was really nice for a lunch in the open air.

The food was good, the menudo was very delicious. Place has a good atmosphere. Their menus are digital, so make sure to bring a phone.

If you didn’t grow up in Santa Barbara you may wonder what the fuss is about Rose Cafe. A longstanding local favorite the food here is decent but not inspirational. You can trust this place to consistently deliver a tasty if not necessarily memorable Mexican menu. Staff is always friendly and seating can be cramped when it’s busy. Prices are typical for Santa Barbara and portions are generous.

Best authentic Mexican food in Santa Barbara. Lots of great classics like Chile Rellenos, Chilaquile, hard and soft shell tacos, tanales, enchiladas. Always friendly service.

9am on a Thursday, its empty, perfect! Lots of phone orders and sounds of clanking and sizzles in coming from the kitchen. The chips & salsa are ❗ Rose Cafe was recommended by the front office manager at the Castillo Inn. He recommended the chile verde omelette (which I got), my wife ordered the chilaquiles.

Rose Cafe is a long-standing local fixture which has understandably drawn some loyalty from the locals over time. The decor and design of the place feels festive and fun. Unfortunately, the grim joylessness of the staff undermines the vibe. I always end up feeling sorry for them and wishing they could do something else with their lives to make them happy, and thats not what I’m looking for in a dining experience. The food ranges from digestible to downright bad, and I’ve ordered dishes (e.g., the beef burrito) that actually taste spoiled, or as if suffering from freezer burn. As a local I regretfully vote “hard no.”

Rose Cafe is an excellent slice of Mexican food in Santa Barbara. I get the Chicken Tacos Guadalajara (in picture below) and it is super consistent and very-very delicious. My wife gets the Chillaquiles and she claims they are the best! I have eaten at many Mexican places in Cali and Mesa is one of my favorites.

It’s hit and miss. Yesterday I had the Chilaquiles and they were not good. Tasted like the fridge. But I’ve had them other times and they’ve been delicious. So I’m just not sure how to feel about this place. I guess if you don’t expect too much you should enjoy your visit. They have a lovely outdoor space.
