I’ve been here three times now — and that alone says something.

I’m particular about Hainanese Chicken Rice because I grew up with it. When a dish carries that name, I expect it to resemble the traditional flavors, not be overly improvised or turned into something completely different.

The first time I tried Rooster & Rice, the rice wasn’t exactly what I’m used to — but everything else was good enough that I came back. And then I came back again.

The chicken is tender and tasty, the ginger-scallion sauce is amazing, and the broth is very good (though I do wish the soup portion were larger — paying extra for a small add-on feels a little steep).

What matters to me is that my stomach is happy afterward — no regret, no wasted food, no disappointment — and that says a lot.

The staff are super nice, which I truly appreciate.

One personal note: I don’t like cold rice, so I ask them to keep the chicken, cucumber, and cilantro separate. That way I can gently reheat the rice and soup at home and enjoy it properly.

This review is based purely on my personal taste and cultural expectations — but overall, it’s a comforting, reliable meal, and I’m glad my husband encouraged me to try it.

Workers here are super friendly! Unusually friendly. Cool to see that. The food was also amazing. Definitely recommend the cutler. They only have outdoor seating, so be prepared for that. The Hat Yai chicken was also good. The people working there said the original, the hat yai, and the cutlet were popular.

I would give this place a 3.5 star. The popcorn chicken was good. It’s good flavor and crispness. I liked the lemongrass flavor. I also ordered Hat Yat chicken. The skin was good and flavorful. However i was disappointed with rice. It was undercooked, too chewy/hard for my taste. Please note this is not a dine in restaurant. I have no issue finding parking on a Saturday.

The food is so fresh and clean tasting here. I liked it a lot. I’m the chicken was moist, the rice was insanely flavorful, and i loved the broth that came with it. I also ordered the fried chicken skin and WOW! It was so good.
The popcorn chicken was so good and the chicken cutlet was great too.
Definitely give this place a try if you are in thr area.

This restaurant is a staple in the Bay Area and I am so excited they have come to So Cal!

This is primarily a take out place but there are a few seats outside if you are not taking your meal to go. The restaurant is clean as are the tables outside. The decor is fun and inviting! The staff is super friendly and greets you as you walk through the door. They know their menu and are happy to help you order should you need suggestions.

The food is soooo fresh and delicious. The cutlet and popcorn chicken are perfectly coated and crispy! Not dry at all!!! The original is also super tender! The side sauces make the dish extra yummy but totally not necessary as the meat has good flavor on its own. The rice…. Yes the rice… I can eat a whole bowl of that yummy rice!

All in all a hit and I will be back!

Pictures shows the plastic lid got melted, due to touching the fried food. Food itself is good, no complain there.

I like to come back to Rooster&Rice. But for fried dish, can you please change the box to a material that’s less sensitive to heat? Thanks for making improvements, owner.

Thank you owner.

Allow me to set the table for you. I’ve placed an order at least once per week since R&R opened.

It is a nostalgic comfort food for me from when I moved to California and lived with my Thai family for 2 or 3 months til I could get my own place. I vividly remember having rice porridge and hat yai within the first day or 2 of arrival and it was around Christmas time so it wasn’t exactly east coast cold but it was cool outside which I found warm and comforting in my new environment.

When I saw R&R opening I knew I needed to try it and from the first bite they have had a loyal customer! I have made it my go-to fun meal 1-2x per week when I don’t bring my own lunch.

Portions and great, quality of food and flavor are both consistently amazing and its something I look forward to all week. I’ve even had it for lunch and like a true fat boy, went back after work to take some home for dinner! Can’t recommend it enough and I’ve also spoken highly of them on Yelp and on my Instagram (@rosodigital). I know of at least 2 friends that saw my praise and went in to try for themselves! Its just satisfying!

The restaurant is always clean and customer service is always warm and friendly. When you visit as much as I do, you begin to develop a relationship with the team. Its not just about the food anymore, its popping in to say hi to friends! ❤️ Check these guys out. Everything is great! I do recommend the Hat Yai and chicken broth!

As others have said, tastes great, but the value isn’t there with the tiny portions. Owners, Please take a look at your portions and cogs. At the current price point, I don’t understand why a healthy serving isn’t possible. Even the soup is only half the container… come on.

Finally a break from burgers for an Asian like me. The taste is same with what I have in my hometown and that is great. First time at this store so I picked up the safe option, the original. Will try others as well.

Come here if you are craving for Hainan inspired chicken with seasoned rice. They have different dipping sauces upon your choice.

I had:
1. Popcorn chicken
2. The cutlet
3. The original: Khao Mun Gai, habanero, the original
