I grew up in Lagos eating this meal and regularly ordered from Platinum Amala (before the downtown Silver Spring location closed), so I know exactly how it should look and taste.
I’ve ordered from Rhuth African before and genuinely thought they gave me the wrong dish because what I received looked nothing like gbegiri, ewedu, or stew in any form.
I gave them another chance a few weeks later, and it was still just as bad. At this point, it’s clear they do not know how to properly prepare gbegiri and ewedu.
Completely unacceptable and a total waste of money.
Update: Response to owner
Thank you for responding, however it should have been told to me on the phone before driving way out there. I asked if the container was circular or square, because photos are showing both. He kept saying black container. How am I supposed to know as a NEW customer that just moved from out of state, that the fried spinach is just for catering? I went to Roger Miller restaurant around the corner and they were VERY professional and I told them my experience here. The owner’s wife spoke to with me also and made fried spinach for me at their establishment and it was good! Please train your employees to inform people of this instead of having them wasting gas driving far away. My relatives made fufu for Christmas and I had a few left over and was craving fried spinach as part of my heritage is of Nigerian, Ghanian, & Sierra Leone Heritage through my dad! I was coming here to support also!
The food is UNREAL. Every dish is bursting with bold, fearless, perfectly layered flavors that command your full attention. The seasoning is immaculate—deep, rich, complex, and powerful without ever overpowering the dish. This is master-level cooking. The kind of cooking that makes you close your eyes, pause mid-bite, and seriously question how something can taste this good. Each plate feels like it was crafted with precision, patience, and generations of culinary wisdom.
The meats are so tender they practically melt before you even chew. The sauces are thick, luxurious, and drenched in soul—each one rich with spice, warmth, and authenticity. Every spoonful feels comforting yet exciting, familiar yet elevated. The sides don’t just “accompany” the meal—they stand boldly on their own, seasoned to perfection and prepared with just as much care as the main dishes. NOTHING is an afterthought here.
And let’s talk about authenticity—because Rhuths African Kitchen does not play around. This is REAL African cuisine, unapologetically traditional, proudly presented, and cooked with immense respect for culture and heritage. You can taste the history. You can feel the love. This is food that speaks. Food that hugs you. Food that reminds you what cooking is supposed to be.
The portions? INSANELY generous. You leave full, satisfied, and already planning your next visit. The value is unmatched—every plate feels priceless because of the quality, the flavor, and the care poured into it. This is the kind of food that ruins other restaurants for you because once you’ve tasted Rhuths, the bar has officially been raised to the sky.
Rhuths African Kitchen isn’t just feeding people—it’s creating memories. It’s introducing culture through flavor. It’s delivering joy, comfort, and excellence on every single plate. Whether you’re new to African cuisine or grew up with these flavors, this place will blow you away in ways you didn’t think were possible.
In conclusion: Rhuths African Kitchen is a LEGEND. A MUST-TRY. A NON-NEGOTIABLE experience. If you haven’t eaten here yet, you are genuinely missing out on something special. Five stars doesn’t do it justice—but it’s all the system allows.
