The atmosphere leans upscale for a café, with a clean, stylish interior that feels intentional rather than overly cozy or cluttered. It’s a great place to sit for a bit and enjoy what you ordered without feeling cramped or chaotic. Service was somewhat distracted, but still efficient and effective. Even though the staff seemed busy, everything was handled correctly and professionally, and we never felt ignored or forgotten.
Pricing felt fair for the quality of the food, drinks, and setting. This isn’t a bargain-basement café, but it delivers enough value that the cost makes sense. Street parking is available nearby, which is typical for a downtown location and wasn’t a problem during our visit.
Overall, Relish Cafe & Confections delivers a high-quality experience with good food, solid coffee, and an elevated café vibe. I would absolutely go back and would recommend it to locals, travelers, or anyone spending time downtown who wants a reliable, well-executed place to stop for something sweet and a good cup of coffee.
I placed my order and waited about 20 minutes without receiving it. During that time, our server stopped by to offer a coffee refill and said my food was on the way. It seemed likely that the order hadn’t been put in initially and was only noticed during that visit. After another 10 minutes, I asked about my food and mentioned that it had been roughly 20 minutes. For context, the restaurant was not busy—only a handful of tables were occupied.
Another staff member brought my food and responded rudely, insisting it hadn’t been 20 minutes and stating she had checked the ticket and it showed only 13 minutes. We weren’t upset or confrontational; we simply wanted to eat and settle our check. The defensive response felt unnecessary. While it may have been 13 minutes since the ticket was entered, that didn’t account for the initial delay. There was no need to argue with us.
Overall, the inconsistent service left a poor impression, and we likely wouldn’t return if we’re back in Elkhart.
The place is definitely understaffed and undertrained.
We had trouble any time we needed a server to bring us water, or our bill, or to take it when we paid. Part of that is where we were sitting, close to the window, behind a massive piller. But part of it was just because they had too few people doing way too much.
It was also extremely loud. The room is open, with nothing to dampen the noise. There were a lot of people chatting very loudly and that was… unpleasant.
The seats at the middle tables were pretty comfy, but the decor is oddly mismatched and if you’re not careful you’ll end up in a very uncomfortable seat – which will make the wait seem even more interminable.
I had the French toast with berries, which was available even though it’s not on the brunch menu, which was brought even though it was 9 and not yet 10 when brunch starts. It’s good french toast, expected more berries for the price. The toast itself was not as thick as at most restaurants, but that meant I could eat it all without being too full.
My husband had the country fried steak, he said it was good.
We also bought donuts. They change daily, but today they had maple bacon, peach cobbler, milk & cookies, and Nutella fritter. We also bought an almond orange croissant. We’ve only tried the croissant and the peach cobbler donut, but they were both amazing.
I don’t know if I’d come back for breakfast, but I will certainly buy more baked goods here. Though the wait for those is still long and chaotic.
Pro tip: there are restrooms in the cafe, but they’re not super visible. When you come in turn left, then left again. There’s another set in the hotel lobby. Both are single occupancy, which is madness in a location with so many people.
