Had a layover in Chicago and badly wanted a deep dish pizza. Didnt want to go outside airport and thats when I found this pizza store inside the airport. Had high expectations but it was all in vein. Ordered a deep dish sausage pizza for $11.99 but it was not worth it plus the flavor was not good. The dough taste was bad so overall its just a below average pizza
Let me start by saying, there’s plenty of options, but deep dish usually takes a long time to cook. The good thing about reggios, their individual slices are already hot and ready. So you can grab it to go to you gate or your airplane ride.
You get what you pay for. It’s not the best to represent Chicago. But it’ll do, for the price and convenience.
Me and my lovely wife had a 3 hour layover in Chicago so we thought let’s try some Chicago style pizza well it was a mistake. When I say this was one of the most disappointing pizzas I’ve had in my life I mean it.
The dough was RAW, cheese not melted and the sauce was COLD. The staff looked like they didn’t want to be there and the product showed.
DO NOT GO HERE!
For most people, Reggio’s Pizza Express sausage pizza would be nothing to write home about. But I’m not most people so I’ll write about it. I’ve never had real Chicago-style, sauce on top pizza; I’ve only seen them in pictures, heard of them through stories. Presumably, this pizza’s sauce amount doesn’t come close to a Chicago style. But it had enough sauce that working my way towards the crust briefly left a joker-esque red smile on my face.
The sausage. It’s a good, well seasoned, marble-sized chunk of a topping.
Now for the crust, the most left-behind part of the pizza. This wasn’t your average pizza crust. It was flaky and buttery, similarly to a pie crust. It’s not as soft and chewy like the crust you’d find in NYC or Little Caesar’s. But it’s definitely enjoyable.
I had a bit of a heavy pour with the chili flakes, perhaps subconsciously adding spice to mask the bittersweetness of leaving DC, my home for the past year.
Overall, the pizza’s good, it did its job. It’s not spectacular, but I didn’t expect it to be. Sometimes all you need is a pie that brings things full-circle and helps you reflect on the past year and the uncertainty of the future. A tall order but the pizza managed.
The pizza was also disappointing. It had a strong refrigerator smell and tasted stale. I only ate it because I was very hungry.
I’ve had worse but I’ve also had a lot better for less than airport prices.
If you’re looking for something quick & Italian then this’ll fill the need. But only just that.
The atmosphere is “crowded airport food court”. Counter service is quick because it’s prepared in advance.
