After Sunday service, I wandered into the Red Rock Grill & Café, located at 228 N Ball Creek Rd NW in Kent City, MI. Let me start with a public service announcement: bring your own ketchup. Whatever brand they’re using should probably be left in witness protection—it’s that bad.
Now, onto the good stuff. I ordered what I believe was called the Hungry Man Special, and it lived up to its name. My plate arrived with three eggs, potatoes (hashbrowns in my case), bacon, and sausage, all accompanied by a large chocolate milk that could have doubled as dessert.
• Hashbrowns: I requested them extra crispy, and to my delight, they came out exactly that way. Not every kitchen respects the “crispy hashbrown” request, but Red Rock nailed it.
• Eggs: Cooked over easy, with runny yolks and firm whites—precisely how they should be.
• Bacon: Crispy, smoky, and delicious. No complaints here.
• Sausage: Thoroughly cooked, though it could have benefited from a bit more sear for that golden edge.
The service was refreshingly balanced. The staff checked in once to make sure everything was fine, then let me enjoy my meal in peace. That’s the sweet spot between attentive and overbearing.
The only other sour note—besides the ketchup—was the surprise credit card service fee. My suggestion? Fold that cost into menu prices or offer a cash discount. Nobody likes discovering hidden fees after the fact.
Enormous pancakes that taste great! Super delicious omelets too.
The service was fine. I could have used one more refill on my coffee, but with the pandemic chaos, I don’t think any restaurant has their customer service dialed in. I don’t judge them there. There was a pretty good amount of water from the ham and oil from the melted cheese that soaked a piece of toast, but that’s a danger of the particular dish. All in all, this is a nice stop in an area devoid of sit down breakfasts otherwise. Give it a try.
