Red Rock Grill & Café: A Breakfast Review

After Sunday service, I wandered into the Red Rock Grill & Café, located at 228 N Ball Creek Rd NW in Kent City, MI. Let me start with a public service announcement: bring your own ketchup. Whatever brand they’re using should probably be left in witness protection—it’s that bad.

Now, onto the good stuff. I ordered what I believe was called the Hungry Man Special, and it lived up to its name. My plate arrived with three eggs, potatoes (hashbrowns in my case), bacon, and sausage, all accompanied by a large chocolate milk that could have doubled as dessert.

• Hashbrowns: I requested them extra crispy, and to my delight, they came out exactly that way. Not every kitchen respects the “crispy hashbrown” request, but Red Rock nailed it.
• Eggs: Cooked over easy, with runny yolks and firm whites—precisely how they should be.
• Bacon: Crispy, smoky, and delicious. No complaints here.
• Sausage: Thoroughly cooked, though it could have benefited from a bit more sear for that golden edge.

The service was refreshingly balanced. The staff checked in once to make sure everything was fine, then let me enjoy my meal in peace. That’s the sweet spot between attentive and overbearing.

The only other sour note—besides the ketchup—was the surprise credit card service fee. My suggestion? Fold that cost into menu prices or offer a cash discount. Nobody likes discovering hidden fees after the fact.

We just lived this down to earth mom and pop restaurant. Nothing overly fancy, just hearty portions, & great tasting food.

Red Rock has an awesome breakfast. The corned beef hash omelet is so good and plentiful. Their breakfasts never disappoint. We have had the club sandwiches and club as a sub and it is amazing! The hard working cooks do a wonderful job. This is our new favorite breakfast place. Sometimes there isn’t enough wait staff and you wait a bit so plan for this. It won’t stop us from returning to Red Rock.

One of the best breakfast spots my husband and I have been to in a long time. Food was incredible (all veggies and bacon for our omelets were VERY fresh) and the service was wonderful! More than one waitress stopped at our table to check on us and top off our coffee. We will definitely be back to try their lunch menu! Especially their pizza

HIGHLY RECOMMEND, this is a great place to eat! The food is always served hot, and plenty. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The place is decorated. There is plenty of free parking. The seating is good for a couple up to table for 10.

Fell into this little Cafe by accident. Lucky we did. Loved the local laid back atmosphere. The service was Hometown. Hard working owner is very proud of her business. The best part, good home cooked food.

This was a solid comfort food breakfast. The toast was a hearty slice of well-toasted white bread (other options were available). There was a blanket of cheese on top of my ham and cheese omelette and I’m not complaining. The omelette was not visible under the cheese. The ham was sliced like sandwich ham vs the common cubed ham in most omelettes. The coffee was also pretty good, standard cafe coffee.

The service was fine. I could have used one more refill on my coffee, but with the pandemic chaos, I don’t think any restaurant has their customer service dialed in. I don’t judge them there. There was a pretty good amount of water from the ham and oil from the melted cheese that soaked a piece of toast, but that’s a danger of the particular dish. All in all, this is a nice stop in an area devoid of sit down breakfasts otherwise. Give it a try.

This place was exactly what we wanted. Small town place run by locals. One of us had the omelette and had tons of veggies in it. The other had the grilled chicken wrap which was great. Service was attentive and very pleasant. We will be back.
