Ran Zan is a small traditional feeling sushi bar, family owned and operated with a single sushi chef. As one of the highest rated sushi bars in Providence I have to say I was very disappointed to say the least. The quality of the fish & rice was that of which you would find at most any sushi restaurant, overly saturated fish lacking in texture. Hard stiff sushi rice laking texture and flavor used for the nigiri (possibly due to the quality of fish on top). This was also a first time for me finding a bone in the sashimi or receiving Kani as part of a house sashimi. They also had Maine Uni available, the portion of Uni was the smallest I have ever received just 3-4 gonads atop very stale rice wrapped in a nori paper which all completely overtook the flavor of the Uni its self. As a whole I would judge Ran Zan as a baseline sushi restaurant by western standards for the quality of its ingredients and the quality put into the preparation and presentation of its dishes. 4.8/10 if you want sushi go to your local spot or look further for the real high quality sushi restaurants/bars Providence HAS to have better to offer.

This place was truly amazing. I haven’t had sushi this good since I was in Japan. It was fresh and reasonably priced. I got the sushi platter, tuna rolls, tofu, chicken, pickles, and 4 glasses of wine (this was between two people lol) and it was $100. I will be back as soon as I’m back to Rhode Island!

I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid, and it’s truly my favorite restaurant! Whenever I come back to Providence I always make sure to stop here. The sushi is always expertly crafted, the miso soup is delicious and light, and the atmosphere is so warm and cozy. I couldn’t recommend this place more!!!

Great quality sushi from a Japanese chef.
I recommend the Spider Roll and their Snow Crab and Asparagus Roll made with real Snow Crab. Their rolls are small and inexpensive which means you can get more variety for your meal, always a plus.
Their tempura sauce is high quality and not watered down like so many others.
The fish is delicious and high quality.
I will be back!

Wonderful high quality fish, portions were perfect mouthful size. Icy cold Sapporo. Lovely to watch the dance of these two elders preparing highest quality sushi and sashimi. Service a bit reactive rather than proactive, but still very pleasant. On Saturday come right after they open at 5 for fast seating and food

We came here on a Sunday night. My wife and I have been looking for an authentic Japanese sushi spot around Providence for a while. We are so glad we found this place. This is a true authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. The owners are Japanese and you can taste the difference. From the selection of ingredients, the way you cut the fish, amount of wasabi to the temperature of the fish. I can tell the chef cares about his craft by these details. This is what makes them so delicious. This place reminded us the taste of delicious sushi we had when we were in Japan. At first I was a bit hesitant because of negative reviews of service provided by a particular waiter which Is probably no longer an issue since there is a “Help Wanted” sign outside. The owner lady was very nice and friendly. We received very good service even though the place was packed. She was very attentive all on her own. So if you want to know what authentic sushi taste like and lives in Rhode Island area I would definitely recommend for you to stop by and try for your self!

Update October 2024 – Grabbed dinner on a Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised we missed the crowds. Sashimi (chutoro, salmon, hamachi, ikura) was excellent!

We’ve been going to Ran Zan for many years and more recently, not as often as we’d like. We were there last Friday evening, on the early side, so we wouldn’t have to wait for a table. We were seated immediately and told that if we order sushi bar items, it would take a little longer. We don’t mind longer wait times, and appreciated the heads up so we could order some non-sushi appetizers.

We had the grilled hamachi kama (fish collar), which is always delicious and highly recommended. If you haven’t tried it, please do!

We also got the agedashi tofu and yakitori (grilled chicken). The tofu was very good, as usual, but not to my surprise, the chicken wasn’t anything special.

With dinner, which was a mixture of a la carte selections of sashimi and nigiri, I had a nice, icy cold Sapporo. Tuna was very fresh, hamachi was delicious, and salmon was also good. Farm-raised salmon isn’t super tasty in general, but it was fresh.

Also had unagi (eel) nigiri, ikura (salmon roe) nigiri, and uni (sea urchin) nigiri. The fish components were tasty, but the rice and nori (seaweed wrapper) were not very good. We’ve noticed this issue with the rice during the past few visits, and don’t order maki rolls anymore, but it would be great if the rice quality returned to its former quality.

Service was polite and professional. Atmosphere is homey and what you would expect for a small, independent establishment. The older couple works hard to continue serving the community authentic Japanese food, so we appreciate the effort and food. There are so few Japanese restaurants in RI which offer authentic Japanese options.
