Ramen Kowa on California Avenue is the “quiet professional” of the Palo Alto ramen scene. While it doesn’t have the cult-like hype or the intense lines of Ramen Nagi downtown, it offers a more relaxed, authentic experience with a focus on clean, high-quality broths and generous toppings.
The Spicy Chicken Paitan is the crowd favorite, delivering a rich, creamy poultry base with a balanced heat that doesn’t mask the flavor. For those leaning toward rice dishes, the Chicken Katsu Curry stands out for its deep, aromatic vegetable-based sauce and perfectly crispy cutlet, while the Tonkatsu Don is a reliable comfort-food staple. An honest critique would be that the prices are slightly elevated—expect to pay around $18–$23 for a bowl—but you are rewarded with larger meat portions (often two pieces of chashu vs. the standard one) and a much more peaceful dining environment.

One of the good vegetarian ramens I’ve had. It has good flavor and the noodles were also cooked well. Silken tofu, brussel sprouts and ginger is a great combination with Ramen. Edamame tossed in light garlic and Sparkly jelly sake were cherry on top.

Very pleased to have Ramen Kowa nearby. The vegetarian and chicken ramen are satisfying and tasty, though not the largest or most flavorful ramen I’ve had. The unexpected highlight of our meal was dessert—the match bingsu (green tea shaved ice tower) is phenomenal. Light, fluffy, airy, and somewhat awe inspiring to behold. The staff is also super friendly.

Impeccable taste. The environment is clean and hygienic, which is one of the most important things for me. Quality and hygiene always come first. When those two are on point, price doesn’t really matter.
Highly recommend.

The server went above and beyond to help my daughter with her order. She was a bit hangry and overwhelmed by the options, so our server took a little extra time to offer a helpful solution that worked great for us. The food was also delicious. The broth of the vegetarian was one of the best I have had and really liked the Brussels sprouts, which was a new ingredient for me.

My family and I ate here on a rainy day and this ramen hit the spot! The gyoza appetizer is pretty standard and fried. The karagge is very spiced so be prepared. The salad is very basic but its there if you have a picky kid….. what was a surprise is the Sapporo ramen that isn’t because of a beer, but an area of Japan and they favor a chicken flavor ramen and it had niso in it! Very deep broth….be prepared. The spicy miso ramen was very welcoming tovthe rest of us and so if you like that enjoy!!

I’ve been coming to Kowa since it’s opened in 2020. Always wonderful staff, not too loud, great quality ramen at reasonable price. I honestly think it tastes much better than Ramen Nagi, which is way too oily and always super crowded with a long line. As a palo alto resident, I highly recommend this cute ramen place!

I got the vegetarian ramen and it tasted delicious! Honestly, one of the best I’ve ever had. However, I was bummed that there were just 6 tiny cubes of tofu. For reference, it was about 1/4 of a serving. Like if I bought a block of tofu from the store and portioned it out into 4 servings, it was about 1/4 of one serving. In comparison, my partner got one of the ramens with pork and received a generous portion of protein. Tofu is generally cheaper than meat, so why be stingy? Luckily, I had some leftover tofu in the fridge that I could add to my meal, but it’s still a bummer to buy a restaurant meal and then have to add your own ingredients so that it’s substantial enough to be filling. Bottom line: The flavor of the vegetarian ramen is EXCELLENT, but it REALLY needs more tofu and an egg. Vegetarians need protein too!

We stumbled onto this place looking for lunch on a busy Sunday. We got an outdoor table pretty quickly, ordered our food, it came in a reasonable amount of time. The food was delicious, and the service was actually really really good, friendly, they checked on us often. We loved our ramen, and our katsu curry. Even the French fries, which are a little odd to have on this menu, were delicious!

I just had the best ramen of my life at Ramen Kowa. Everything from the depth of the broth to the perfect texture of the noodles was absolutely phenomenal. You can taste the passion and care in every bite. The atmosphere is cozy, the service is warm, and the food speaks for itself. This place is a hidden gem—I can’t recommend it enough. I’ll definitely be coming back!
