THE DEETS:
A community-oriented restaurant with reasonably priced, locally grown food and high quality seafood.
You can’t get more local than the food grown on your own farm and more than three quarters of all the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown on the farm. That makes for a very small carbon footprint and really fresh food!
Farmer & the Fish is located within the 22 acre Purdy Land Trust in North Salem, New York in a beautiful 18th century house that dates back to 1775.
You are literally dining in a historic house and it is such a nice vibe.
FOOD & BEV:
We were a party of three and we started off with some bevs of beer and wine with the house bread and delish salted herbed butter.
We respectively got a lobster roll, clam chowder with a side of polenta fries, and the tuna burger. Everything was on point and really good.
We finished off with a coffee, espresso, and cappuccino. The foam on the cap was so tight & probably on of the best I’ve ever had.
SERVICE:
Our main server was amazing but they practice team service and everyone working today touched our table at some point and we felt the love.
AMBIANCE:
The house itself is one year older than the USA and there is a fireplace in each nook. There is a quaint little bar when you first enter with a small raw bar at the end of it.
What a treat and this will not be my last visit! As always, support your local small biz & this is it!!! Cheers.
Out reservation was at 7pm, we showed up at 6:58pm and were not seated until 7:15. I noticed all parties were leaving with one red rose, adorable! Some of the waitstaff that had to reach between or around us to get the roses had attitude as if they were mad we were there. There was no where else to stand and the roses were right in the entryway. There were also roses near the bar so they should have just grabbed those.
We were second in the group of 7pm reservations, multiple people who came after us were sat first and I had to ask the hostess to seat us (she was walking around calling for the same person over and over when there were 4 or 5 couples waiting).
When we were walking to the table, we were asked to check our coats. Great, but should have been done right away instead of 15 mins after the rez. Lady who took our coats also had a bit of attitude. I get its busy but its a special night and couples are paying a lot to be here. The least we could get is a smile.
When we were finally sat, we did not get service for another 10/15mins. The waitress came over, gave a big sigh and said “what can I get you to drink?” No introduction, no “happy valentines day”, just very rushed. We ordered, my boyfriend’s drink came alone. We asked the guy who brought the apps over to check on my drink. 20 mins after we ordered, the waitress comes over and says they dont have the ingredients. By 8PM, 1hr after my reservation, I finally got it and was never asked if I wanted another drink.
Food was phenomenal, of course. Entree was a little colder than expected (green beans were hotter than meats). All high quality ingredients. Waitress brought us the check but never brought me a rose and bf had to ask for one on the way out.
Maybe its a matter of needing more staff or not scheduling as many reservations, but both my boyfriend and I were disappointed with the lack of love. Maybe they don’t realize that this dinner is a once a year experience for some people.
We took a little detour to explore the town and this cute place caught our eyes. Glad we made a plan change last min and came to this place.
Outdoor seating is indeed beautiful we sit inside though given we have no reservation and obviously this place is popular.
Service is kinda “cool” style but my server def recommended me an amazing dish – Tuna spicy fried rice maybe? LOVE LOVE LOVE
Gonna come back again .
This is a perfect brunch or dinner place for people live in westchester or even CT area. The waterfall nearby can be another casual hiking before or after the meal 🙂
Overall, a great spot for those seeking a rustic yet refined meal that’s Michelin rated.
