The dough? Light and crusty, like your favorite aunt who tells it like it is. The edges are caramelized and crispy enough to make you wonder if you should just order a whole pie made entirely of crust. The weekly specials are always changing, always delicious, and somehow never feel like the kitchen just threw random stuff on top and called it “artisan.”
Honestly, it’s a dangerous kind of good. You come in thinking, “I’ll just grab a slice,” and suddenly you’re three pies deep, rethinking your life choices, and Googling if eating pizza three days in a row counts as a Mediterranean diet.
Atmosphere is only saved because I know the history of that space and how old it is.
The one thing that was disappointing and may cause me to never go back was the service, I walked in and no one seemed to care – no hello or hi – ordered the pizza and a drink, the guy taking the order could have cared less – ate the food and no thanks for coming in, see ya again, how was the food…nothing.
Do restaurants not realize how important a friendly person at the register or a friendly person taking the order is?
A decent nice human to greet people and make them feel welcome?
A shame really cause again the pizza was good, but lack of friendliness and being over priced will be this places downfall.
Next.
The pizza is really good, and I say this as someone who isn’t a huge pizza person. It’s a Detroit-style pan pizza, and the crust is A+. Kind of pan-fried a bit from the oil — loved it. I had a slice of the combo pizza, but the Papi pizza… wow! The jalapenos, pineapple, pepperoni and hot honey is a magical combo. The marinara sauce is very light and fresh. Everything was done really well. I highly recommend checking this place out.
The person helping us out, Juan, was helpful AND enthusiastic about the job and the pizza- always a good sign.
7/5 stars if I could
Precious Pizza recently moved across the street into the former location of a long-time classic Salem diner, and the space could not be a better fit for what they do. From the moment you walk in, it feels like time travel—in the best possible way.
The atmosphere immediately evokes nostalgia. There’s counter seating like you’d find in classic American diners from 20, 50, or even 100 years ago. The walls are decorated with photos honoring Nonnas (grandmas), which perfectly explains the food before you even order it. There was even an old TV with a built-in VCR playing the animated Hobbit, quietly humming in the background like something out of a childhood visit to grandma’s house. This place doesn’t try to be trendy—it’s comfortable, warm, and real.
The pizza is exceptional. Square and rectangular grandma-style pizzas that are closest to Detroit or Chicago style, but honestly feel more like the kind some lucky people grew up eating at home. The dough is the foundation and it’s outstanding. The crust has deeply caramelized edges—brown to almost black—crispy if you love the corner pieces, while the middle stays soft, airy, and pillowy. The texture was so good I was still thinking about it more than 7 hours after my last bite.
We ordered all four of the main pizzas plus the special of the month. Standouts included the “Papi”, a fun and thoughtful twist on Hawaiian , and a classic combo with sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, and bacon. The homemade tomato sauce is rich and balanced, and the house-made ranch dressing is excellent by any standard. Don’t skip the garlic bread knots—they were phenomenal and genuinely tasted like something your mom or grandma would make without needing a recipe.
Owners Alex & Katie happened to be working when our large family of 16 came in to celebrate the holidays. Katie effortlessly combined tables so we could all sit together comfortably, and the entire experience felt welcoming and relaxed. Booths seat four, there are multiple tables for four, and a larger table in the back—but more importantly, the space adapts easily to families and groups.
The bar menu is surprisingly diverse with well-made cocktails, beer, and wine. The non-alcoholic options are also excellent, including handmade Italian sodas with real cream. There’s a projector in the back where you can watch multiple games on YouTubeTV or movies via YouTube Premium, adding to the hang-out-at-grandma’s-house energy. They even have a New Year’s Eve party starting at 8pm, with leopard print encouraged .
Slices are about $6.50, whole pies around $35, cut into roughly 9–12 thick slices (about 1.5 inches). One slice will fill you up—but you’ll want more. The Caesar Salad dressing is homemade and should not be skipped.
If you’re looking for pizza that feels like Back to the Future at Grandma’s, this is it. When you think of grandma, think of Detroit and Chicago at their best. Salem is lucky to have Precious Pizza.
