Stopped by a few weekends ago, a little past noon, and the place was already packed. Most of the food items (including the egg rolls) were sold out by then, so we ended up ordering the grilled pork bánh mì, a salted matcha latte, and an egg coffee.
The salted matcha latte was great. This was only my second time trying salted foam on a latte, but the sweet-and-salty combination worked as expected. The foam added a pleasant savory note that balanced the matcha nicely without overwhelming it.
The egg coffee, unfortunately, was bad. We had to wait an extra 20 minutes for a fresh batch of egg foam, but even then, it didn’t integrate well with the espresso and tasted bitter. My Vietnamese friend mentioned that egg coffee is typically much sweeter (closer to a dessert coffee), so this wasn’t quite what I imagined.
The grilled pork bánh mì was good. Can’t say I eat enough banh mi to call this top-tier or not, but the baguette had the right crunch. Just wish there was more sauce.
The Iced Egg Coffee is delicious. Eat a spoonful of the egg foam and then sip the coffee for a decadent blend of caffeine and sweet creamy goodness.
I also had the Bo Kho and it was the perfect cozy meal on a cold winter day. It’s got a nice light kick to warm you up, and it comes with a baguette for you to tear up and dip. 10/10 no notes.
My family got the grilled pork bahn mi, grilled chicken spring rolls, and the avocado toast. All excellent dishes as well!
All that to say- if you find yourself near Ball Square then do yourself a favor and come check this place out!
We just went on a weekday. Opposite experience. Empty. Clean. And the food – wow. Got the stew and was floored. An aunty brought it out within 7 min of ordering. So much depth of flavor. I’ve always wanted a place that offered real food for breakfast. Not pastries. I’ve finally found it. Bread was meh.
Coffee was good. Not my style because it’s more dessert style but amazing if you like that kinda thing. Custard on egg coffee was silky but very sweet. Coconut was tasty but again too sweet for me. Not sure if we can do a less sweet option or if the sugar is necessary for the custard texture. Great food presentation. For here coffee was served in plastic. Would rather glass. Straws weren’t the right shape (too narrow/ bent so couldn’t work with thick drinks). Coffee custard made to order so it’s definitely awesome but not a quick drink to grab on the way to work.
Still things to sort out but hope they stick around.
For drinks, we ordered a salted matcha latte and an egg coffee. The salted matcha latte was amazing – creamy, perfectly salted, and just sweet enough. The egg coffee isn’t normally something that would sound appealing to me, but after learning that it’s a popular Vietnamese coffee drink, I thought I should try it, and I was NOT disappointed! It was super creamy, almost like an egg custard placed on top of coffee. It’s served with a spoon – it’s that creamy!! Highly recommend!!!
(09/14/23 – We stopped in for iced ube matcha lattes…and they were soooo good! Also highly recommend these!)
The avocado toast came with two slices of bread, a layer of guacamole, slices of avocado, one hard boiled egg, and a side of mixed greens. Jacob, one of the partners, came to greet us and actually offered to bring a new egg, one that was soft boiled. And while we didn’t accept it, we thought the gesture was very sweet and kind. It was much appreciated, as it showed that they take great pride in their products and they pay attention to detail.
We also met VTec, another partner, who was super friendly and very chill. When asked about his name, he explained, “I fix cars on the weekdays and bahn mis on the weekends.” Seriously, so cute!
Overall, a great experience and I highly recommend. Another lovely addition to Ball Square!!
