We visited here because it is always so busy and had heard favorable reviews about their food. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I thought it’s strange that a breakfast place doesn’t offer Swedish pancakes on the weekends. I ordered the steak and eggs and the steak was fine but not great, The scrambled eggs were built more like an omelette and weren’t fluffy. The pancakes required, a knife to cut them. Also, service was very rushed. Although our server was very nice, we informed her, it was our first time-she did not take extra time to offer suggestions on the menu when we found out Swedish pancakes were not offered. It was also hard to keep her attention to ask her questions about certain entrées that were on the menu, she seemed in a hurry to get to the next task which intern made us feel rushed when attempting to decide on an alternative entrée. We visited on Saturday around noon.
The tables are all very close together And the parking lot is incredibly tight, especially since we drive a full size pickup I understand this is a Rockford staple. This is a review on MY experience being a first rime patron.

This place was amazing. As soon as we stepped in the door we were greeted by the chef and then seated. This is a very family friendly place. Extremely clean, well mannered and highly efficient service. A great place with very well done meals. The taste is reminiscent of a well cooked family meal in the kitchen. We will be eating here until we can’t.

Best damn gyro omelet! Family fun diner experience. Great service, and the owner interacts with the customer. Love to come here every time I’m in town.

We recently had the pleasure of dining at this charming little diner. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles We loved that the cook personally greeting each customer as they walked in the door. The staff was not only friendly but also efficient, ensuring prompt service.

When it came to the food, we were not disappointed. One of the first things that caught our attention was the reasonable prices. It’s refreshing to find a diner that offers quality food at affordable prices. We ordered the biscuits and gravy which were absolutely delicious. Another standout dish was the Meat Lovers Omelet, which was filled to the brim with a variety of meats. It was a hearty and fulfilling breakfast.

While the main dishes impressed us, I must admit that the potatoes didn’t quite live up to my expectations because of the diner’s name, “Potato Shak.” They were tasty, but they didn’t offer anything particularly unique or different. Nonetheless, they complemented the meal well.

One thing to keep in mind when visiting the Potato Shak is that they only accept cash as a form of payment.

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a homestyle meal, the Potato Shak is definitely worth a visit. The friendly staff, reasonable prices, and delicious food make it a standout and very popular diner in the area.

We love this place! Their food is reasonably priced and the staff is VERY friendly. Especially the cook, he greets everyone and asks everyone how their meal was. It’s a small diner that only takes cash so be ready for that. The biscuits and gravy are to die for! The actual best.

The Shak Skillet (sausage, peppers, onions, and potatoes was generously sized. Many customers were greeted here by name. It’s good old fashioned food with old fashioned prices.

Took my friend out for Father’s Day- he had the biscuits and gravy and I had pancakes with eggs and ham. Huge portions, swift service, and the owner/chef asked us after the meal was over how everything was. The breakfast was simple but perfect, you couldn’t make it better. I was surprised to see how clean and bright the interior was- you can tell this place gets a deep clean several times a week. Will be a repeat customer!

So-I stumbled across the Potato Shak while driving somewhat “lost” without my GPS, which is fine because it’s still the best way to “feel” your way around (as long as you have decent sense of direction and a compass) I could tell from the look of it that it had a vintage vibe to it and after collecting the family later in the day-we returned to find an awesome old-school diner chock-full of folks from our finest generation! The staff of the Shak were friendly and the food was great! The prices were even better as it looked like the menus haven’t changed in decades!!! We can only ask that more old-town places like this stay active for years to come! We WILL Be back!
