This is the best chowder on the Oregon coast, or anywhere for that matter. Far from the soup-like chowder everyone is accustomed to. Thiiiicc with 2 C’s. A proper hearty chowder not skimping on ingredients, especially the clams. I challenge anyone to find better chowder. See the photo and marvel how it holds a spoon vertically.

I had the lemon pepper halibut. It was delicious! The bartender was very friendly. Patrons were nice and helpful with menu.
I had a wonderful time and I would return. Thanks again.

Best fish and chips in Astoria Hands down. Best seasoned waffle fries I’ve ever had and the best tartar sauce. Haven’t tried anything else but it all looks amazing and everybody in the bar said you can’t go wrong with this menu.

Go for the halibut stay for the people! Friendly, local pub, decorated like a sea fair town should. Interesting characters to talk to while you drink beer

Casual pub with good food. Daily specials and good go to items. Plenty of draft and other beverage options. Service was friendly and fast. Chowder is delicious. Nice, fun stop when in the area. Parking out back.

I highly recommend stopping at the Portway Tavern if you love dive bars and history. Cute little place by the bridge with convenient parking behind the building. We just stopped in for one beverage but have heard good things about the food (particularly the clam chowder – which we will try next time). Seemed well attended by regulars. Staff was friendly with just the right amount of attentiveness.

Food: This may be the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, served very hot and crisp. Large chunks of very fresh-tasting halibut in the thinnest and crispest of breading. Excellent tartar sauce. Enough fresh lemon. Wonderful fresh and tasty cole slaw. Fries crisp as expected.
Service: I’m sorry I didn’t get her name (Monday 2/2/26 around 3 pm-ish). She couldn’t have been nicer or more attentive. Thank you, my dear. You didn’t know you were serving me my birthday lunch on a day I was away from home helping a bereaved family member. But your warm-heartedness was very much appreciated.
Atmosphere: it’s a video-gambling tavern on a busy road—so nothing special. But clean, safe and welcoming with nice people—can’t complain. Food very great for the humble venue.

I went for a drive to the coast and I ended up exploring downtown Astoria for a little while. And when I got hungry I went looking for some place where I could go and sit down and have a good meal, out of the 30 mph winds.
It was nice and cozy inside. A single room, with enough room for 30 people to congregate.
The glasses are thick and heavy carved like crystal, giving the impression that they have been purchased from one of the many antique stores in town.
I ordered the fish and chips, even though they seemed a little pricey, But the portions were big And I said I couldn’t finish.
The bartender topped off my glass without me needing to ask her to.
And they even had a problematic old man sitting at the end of the bar, talking with everyone in the room like he was already their friend. He was lovely whoever he was!
One of the gentlemen who was at the Lottery machines had a big payout while I was there, so that was fun to see.

Let me start by saying this is the best chowder in town. Last night I picked up three bowls of chowder, and there was something weird about it. It wasn’t thick and it had a strong taste of lemon. It did taste very different than the chowder I have been getting for a long time. I hope the recipe hasn’t changed.
