An outstanding spot for seafood lovers. Every dish tasted fresh and perfectly prepared, truly highlighting the quality of the ingredients. The server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made the whole dining experience feel welcoming and relaxed. I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portion sizes, especially considering how fair the prices are for such high quality meals. If you are in Newark, New Jersey and craving exceptional seafood, this place absolutely deserves a visit. I highly recommend it for a five star dining experience.

On a whim, we were bound for Ironbound (my first time) and wound up at PortuCale.

Dinner started very promising. We got Uma Combinacao Aperitivos Portugueses featuring small square dishes of flamed Portuguese sausage, octopus in garlic sauce, shrimp in garlic sauce, and sautéed hot potatoes. All garlicky, olive-oil drenched deliciousness.

Then we got to the Paelha Marinheira, and it kind of fell apart. The rice felt…Goya-like. Sort of artificial. The seafood combo was overcooked and chewy. Kind of sandy too. The whole dish was simultaneously salty and bland, and we regretted getting it.

Sadly, they were also out of our first, second and third choice desserts, so we wound up with a giant slice of Molotof to end our meal on a better note. It was fine, but I wouldn’t order it again.

Appreciated that the clientele around us were all speaking Portuguese, and this clearly is an old school neighborhood spot–but I think we’ll keep exploring the area for dinner options.

Absolutely phenomenal! Hands down the best food I’ve ever had. The potatoes were buttery and seasoned to perfection, and the scallops and clams from the seafood festival were unreal… fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Every bite was a 10/10! The sangria is the best I’ve had anywhere in town… fruity, smooth, and dangerously good. The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I’m already planning my next visit, this place is a must-try!

Went to try their new porterhouse steak. Melted off the bone. Amazing price for it and they have a good amount of meat on the bone so it was not a waste at all. Was so flavorful, and the mashed potatoes were perfection with it. The chocolate mouse for desert was exactly how my family makes it so it brought back instant memories.

All the servers and bartenders were so much fun and just was a great time!

I’m giving these guys 5 stars because I’ve never heard any waiter sing the Happy birthday song as passionate as this guy! We had my cousin’s birthday here. The food tasted amazing. Service was great with little wait time for the food. They also had amazing broa haha 🙂 We had bacalhau, leitao, frango assado, steak, giant shrimp. All tasted amazing. My only regret is that we didn’t have dessert from the place because we brought the birthday cake from an outside place. But these guys were nice enough to hold it for us and bring it out in time with the candles. It wasn’t too noisy, so we were able to enjoy conversations and laughters. Their indoor seating is nice and spacious with a few rooms to dine in. They also have plenty of outdoor dining space. They also have parking! Thank you so much for your hospitality and for making my cousin’s birthday so memorable. We all had a great time.

If you want okay/ decent eatable food stick to their steaks, as we were a large party, everyone whom didn’t get steak was disappointed. I was super disappointed as the food was bland with no flavor and I could tell their shrimp was frozen and not correctly thawed. Their vegan paella was overpriced and again no seasoning with a bunch of frozen vegetables. The chicken portucale was disgusting. Again stick to their steaks, delicious.

I give them high stars because their servers were awesome, and very funny to be around. That and the automesphere kept us smiling.

Better food would definitely elevate the experience.

We use to frequent here a lot before Covid time. We have been here before with a group, but this was the first time we came as a small group. First it is one of the only places that is open late in Newark on a weekday. It wasn’t packed on this particular night. Even though it was past 10 pm the servers were very attentive and helpful.

Everyone enjoyed their meals. My meat was moist and flavorful. It was perfect. My parents enjoyed their seafood choices as well. The sangria was perfectly missed. I forgot how much I enjoyed this place. We will back again.

A cozy yet elegant spot in downtown Newark, couldn’t ask for more! As someone who does not know Portuguese cuisine I was so happy to try and and throughly enjoyed it. The old world ambiance is also super intriguing and made me feel like I was both at home and somewhere I’ve never been.

It’s my last time ordering out from this restaurant
My experience is amount of money you pay it’s more than the food you get
Example a mariscada
I felt that I basically was eating the rice with the sauce that comes with the mariscada
Ridiculous
A tray of mariscada that basic all is full of sauce
The seafood feels it was counted to be inside tray
I’m a person that 90% I order out
Never seen a restaurant that I had order food out so miserably serve (portion wise
Nope
I do learn
Taste wise not the greatest
Had so much better
Hod bless
