Pops Kitchen Downtown

I visited here at 3:25pm on a Friday afternoon while taking a food break from City Museum. I finally ordered at 3:40pm via tablet (delay due to son’s indecisiveness). Sons and I are visiting from out of town. Order included: Kids chicken tenders and fries, chicken Philly, regular Philly, mozzarella sticks, and 3 Arizonas; total was $47. The prices on the tablet for some items were slightly higher than prices listed on the menu above the counter.

Food was ready at 4:04pm. It was odd to see other people come, order, and receive their food before us though. We ate inside. Whatever seasoning they use on the fries and moz sticks can be overwhelming in large quantities; it made us cough. Nonetheless, food was enjoyable! It was our second time eating here but first time was via food delivery a few days prior.

Everyone, I found you a late night spot. Pops Kitchen on Washington Ave is proof that not all late-night fried food has to come in a cardboard box from a chain. This is the local joint where the grease is just better and the fish actually tastes like fish. I went all in on the catfish and it was #StLouisPescatarianApproved The breading was perfectly crispy and the inside was flaky. And yes, I was out past midnight, so where’s my medal?

It’s okay if you are looking for a quick bite. Make sure to check your order before you leave the store. They toast only the bottom bun on the burgers and the bread is very hard and unpleasant so make sure to tell them not to toast it.

As far as the taste of the food, bland. I NEVER taste any seasoning. Only lemon pepper. For the pricing, you would think that you’d get some resemblance of flavor. Some people love it, I particularly don’t care for the taste of plain chicken and water burgers.

I ordered via door dash . I order honey gold wings but they’re clearly like mild or something. I tasted no flavor just sauce that was honey gold it was like a mild sauce flavor is best I can describe. However it was NOT nasty. It was fresh. But just not the flavor of honey gold I thought I was getting. Then the mushrooms were covered in maybe lemon pepper or something which ok I’ll deal with it but when I bit into the mushroom it was doughy. The outside was crispy but the breading wasn’t finish cooking. It wasn’t terrible I ate it but definitely wouldn’t spend another $20 on 6wings fries & doughy mushrooms. Best of luck. And again the wings weren’t nasty just not honey gold flavor they were like mild sauce (not buffalo) mild. Like the kind that kinda tastes like ketchup.

I wanted some late night food and the reviews seemed ok, so I gave it a go. Long story short, it was a complete bust. I ordered my food at 1:15 and I’m leaving a review 30 minutes later. That’s how terrible this food was. It was complete slop. The fish was so undercooked that all the breading completely fell off. I mean all of it. The fries were gross, soft and undercooked. They tasted as though they attempted to cook too many fries in the basket at once. To add insult to injury they didn’t season the food or provide bread, pickles and onions. I’m not sure if they serve this standard of food to the late night crowds only, but I would never attempt to eat here again at any time of day.

I made a purchase for $25.13 which included 4 wings gizzards and a 4 dollar uncharge on okra and I asked was a drink included the answer was no where as I totally understand that inflation is at a all time high but to simply be cheated is diabolical and what’s even crazier is that I paid $11.32 for this exact meal last week. With this being stated this business has lost my patronage forever.

The chicken tender meal (#7) was by far some of the best chicken I’ve had in a while! I’m here for work and from Texas, I can appreciate a good fried chicken! The service was great for it being at 10pm too!

Was in town for my birthday weekend, out late and starving. Came across this place because it was 300ft away and one of the only places open that late. The food was delicious. There will be a little wait that time of night because they stay busy. Its not really a sit down and eat spot, even though they do have seating. Now. To the food. The fries were impressive. A good 30mins after picking it up, the fries were still warm and soft, not hard and crappy. Great seasoning on all the fried food. The egg rolls are really spring rolls, but insanely delicious. The shrimp are huge, perfectly cooked and the flavor. I didnt even need ketchup. Don’t take offense if you feel they’re a bit abrupt. They keep it quick to get everyone in and out. Even though it was busy, it was still organized. All in all, go! I’ve been disappointed often in restaurants lately. This one made up for some of the others.
