Iowa City – Carol found this cool lil joint, we tried it out this week. Could smell the smoke a block away, the smoke wasn’t deceiving – there’s some great food in here. Large portions, fair price point. I imagine this place is packed when the students are in town.
The fries are PERFECT, I had the smoked chili dog it’s worth a try like no other you’d had before. The cornbread had a cinnamon sugar dusting, it was a large portion good to the last bite!
We look forward to going back!

I’ve eaten here twice, both times very good. First the food comes out HOT. I’m not sure I’ve ever, in hundreds of reviews, commented on the food being hot. Well, here, it is. Which is awesome. Like, it’s the end of the meal, and my beans still need to cool on my spoon.

They give you a small personal dipping sauce. “Not cool,” you may think… but no need for more really, the ribs are individually glazed, after being cut. So good!
Fries are like Five Guys. Good stuff.
Beans are magical. But not in that way, just amazing.
Brisket is soft, and candied with pepper on the outside like a Texas pit.

AMAZING FOOD.
lemme just start by saying i LOVE bbq. I don’t play bout my bbq, but this HANDS DOWN is the BEST and i’m not exaggerating the BEST bbq i’ve had in iowa city. I had the brisket sandwich and i tore it up no crumbs left in less than 10 bites. had me licking the plate in the restaurant. even my wife who is not a huge fan of bbq due to her caucasian nature thought it was the BEST bbq she’s ever had. she got the build your own mac and cheese with chicken and bbq sauce and she tore it up. and don’t get me started on the cornbread. the cornbread is by far one of the best i’ve ever had i can only think of some places better. they are nicely sized, sweet with. good consistency, not dry or bland very moist and flavorful, would recommend. if your looking for good bbq PLEASE come here. i will be back at least once a week from now on.

I ordered two 1-lb. rib tip and fries baskets. The rib tips tasted really good even without any extra sauce. The seasoning and texture were on point. Portions were a very good amount. Staff was friendly on the phone and in person. I’ll definitely stop by again and dine in and recommend it.

I’ve tried a few things at Pop’s BBQ over time—pretty sure I had a BBQ sandwich once, but it must not have stood out because I don’t really remember it. What does stand out are the smoked chicken tacos. They’re my go-to: topped with a sweet, candied tomato relish, lettuce, cheese, and a white sauce that ties everything together. They come with fries, and if you swing by on a Tuesday, you can grab them at the Taco Tuesday special price.
The place stays busy, especially with the college crowd since it’s right downtown by campus. Parking can get tight depending on the time of day, but overall it’s worth the stop for those tacos alone.
