The menu offers three sizes of crab cake. 2, 4,and 8 ounce portions. Eight ounces is a decent meal. Dive in and try a crabby patty. : ) your tummy will thank you!
There are a couple of soups available. Rebecca provided samples of each. I enjoyed the cream crab soup.
The location is right next to Dunkin’
Donuts. It shares a space with a private chef who also offers specialty burgers. Kinda 3 businesses in one location.
Keep trying new things!
This experience seems incomplete in a number of ways. First we didn’t expect there to be no place to eat, there’s room to add a few tables and we would highly recommend doing so. I read many reviews and atmosphere is consistently given 5 stars however this place has zero atmosphere unless your looking for a weird office vibe where you really do not even know which desk to order what from. The lobby area isn’t really clean featuring multiple bug traps and dirty corners as well as unused signage and a feel that just doesn’t work.
Now the food, the food was overall pretty dang good; again feeling somewhat incomplete though. We ordered a medium crab cake (delicious) but seems pricey at $22, a crab dip and Cream Crab soup. The crab dip was just that dip with nothing to dip in it exactly how we were to eat it was a little puzzling. We originally thought the crackers that were in the bag but pretty sure those went with the soup. The dip is also very heavy in mayonnaise which is the most forward flavor; but still pretty good.
Lastly the soup, the soup was good, but seems to be missing something, hard to pin exactly what it is but it lacks body and is very thin for a cream soup and fairly bland truthfully.
Overall, I may be generous with 4 stars because we had very high hopes and this place just misses that expectation. You are paying premium prices for premium food and the entire package just doesn’t match.
One last thing that didn’t affect us, the hours on the door do not match the hours posted on Google, not really sure which is correct.
I wound up trying a large crab cake and my wife had the cream-style crab soup. Both items were fantastic and seasoned perfectly. The temperature was right on point, which is important since they are takeout-only (though there is a picnic table out front). All in all, Poppy’s is a superb seafood spot. If you’re a blue crab fan, this is a must-try. Many thanks to the crew at Poppy’s for their hospitality and a delicious dinner!
I recently ordered 20 crab cakes from Poppy’s for a wine and cheese party, and they were a show-stopping hit. As someone who lived in Maryland, I can honestly say these are the real deal—packed with lump crab meat, beautifully seasoned, and blissfully free of the heavy breading and fillers you find elsewhere. We ordered a mix of regular and gluten-free, and both were equally exceptional.
I also had a chance to meet the owner, Rebecca, and she was an absolute delight—warm, accommodating, and clearly passionate about bringing authentic quality to Denver, NC.
Poppy’s is a fantastic new addition to the community, and I highly recommend supporting this local business. Whether you’re craving true Maryland-style crab soup or crab cakes or hosting guests, this is a place you don’t want to miss!
