You know that feeling of familiarity you get when you walk into a chain diner you’ve been in 100 times before? Now recall the feeling of familiarity you get when you walk into the restaurant down the street from your house with the owner that knows your name and greets you with a smile every time you walk through the door. Combine those feelings together and you get Piston Diner.
By the time I opened the menu, I didn’t even care if the food was good. Fortunately, for me, it was the portions are huge, and the flavors are rich. Also, for the record, if you like soup, I can’t think of a better place to go. The chef here is obsessed with soups. There is a dizzying variety and they’re all tasty.
The waitstaff has that grizzled air to them like “Flo from Alice“ (if you’re old enough to understand that reference) but they hide it well. Everyone is very friendly and helpful.
All in all, this nondescript Café/Greasy Spoon will leave an impression on you. Whether you live here or you’re just passing through, It’s worth a stop.

I came all the way from Delaware just to try the soup, and it absolutely did not disappoint! I got the special for only $13.99, which included a half sandwich and a soup flight with 3 soups of my choice such an amazing deal! But honestly, everything on the menu was so good, from the fresh ingredients to the friendly service. This place totally exceeded all my expectations. Definitely worth the trip!

First time visiting after hearing about the place and I’m 20 min away. The reviews are on point. Soups are delicious and portion sizes are very generous as I had to bring the other half of my panini home to enjoy later. This place the closest thing to being home. Service was impeccable and our server, Layla, was an angel! I knew from reading the reviews on the service I’d bring extra money for the well earned big tips. She certainly deserved it! We’ll be back for sure!

Wow! What a diner!! The whole vibe was Spot on!! Breakfast was great. Only exception…the amount of green peppers in the meatlovers skillet. You may want to ask b4 ordering to have the cut back & make sure they are cooked. Otherwise amazing. You 1st walk in to see the soup flight menu. I took a photo of today’s menu. Will be back again for lunch.

In 2023 we found the Piston Diner on a Los of “You picked them: The 16 absolute best diners in Southern NJ” and we had to stop on our latest trip south.
This is definitely a local diner! People are greeted by name and we were warmly welcomed – seated quickly and our waitress was friendly and attentive.
