Our meals were overpriced, $17.99 for a bowl of Pho Bo — noodles and meat in broth. Reasonably tasty but nothing special.
The staff seemed to have been completely untrained, unmotivated and unsupervised. Basics such as a hospitable welcome or even placing the entree in front of the guest are tasks unknown to staff. I ordered a tofu dish, only for the waitress to return to say the kitchen was out of tofu (although a Vons supermarket is about 50 yards away.)
When we visited on a Tuesday evening, the restaurant was nearly empty, although dirty dishes from departed customers covered no less than six tables, testament to lazy staff who couldn’t be bothered to clear the tables despite the dearth of customers.
All in all, the food was OK, though overpriced. The poor service and lack of any ambience make it worth passing on.
To top it off, spacious seating and very friendly staff. They’re also open through dinner, unlike many others around town I noticed closing around 4-5pm.
We don’t even mind driving all the way from Aliante just to eat here…the food and service are totally worth it! Definitely one of our new favorite spots!
Now for the good stuff. The Banh Mi was fantastic and has been on my mind ever since. First, the Seattle price comparison. They were $8+ which is more than the $5-$6 we were used top paying in the Emerald City but that’s more in line with inflation and the economy. The French bun was excellent and the mix of grilled meat and pickled veggies was perfect. I’ve had it on my mind every since. The downside is that I like to get a sandwich and a bowl of pho and French dip my sandwich in the broth. Maybe I can persuade them to sell me a small cup of broth on my next visit. There will definitely be a next visit though. This was on point!
The pork sandwich was fabulous. I normally do not like bahn mi as there is too much bread, but this was light, fluffy and toasty and did not overwhelm the pork.
Not the cheapest, but very well done. Will be back when I have the time and $.
