Just had our first plate from here. WOW!
We were a bit early for chicken but the brisket and barbacoa were amazing! The bark, flavor, tenderness were easy 8.5!
But let me tell you about the sides. The potato salad, made with red potatoes, had a little skin and had a nice portion of pickle juice, both of which I love. The pinto beans were delicious. The bbq sauce is vinegar more than sweet, tasted like nothing I’ve had from a bottle, gotta be made in-house. Probably one of best all-round plates of BBQ I’ve had.
But the tamales, DAAAAAM.
The masa was moist, didn’t fall apart, and was nearly wrapped in the husk, came out clean, didn’t leave half the masa on the husk. And the half beef, half pork was seasoned well.
We’ll definitely be back!

The food here is good. The brisket is always moist and the tamales are good.

But don’t get your heart set on something on the menu before you get there- they are always out of stuff, so you really never know if you’re even gonna be able to get what you want off the menu.

The side that comes with it is tiny. It’s actually just a little sauce ramekin basically. Literally two bites and it’s gone. You have to pay more for bigger sides.

Don’t expect pleasantries, they’re rude pretty much every time I go in there. If it’s busy, call ahead, because they will be annoyed at you if you want to order there and wait, because it’s this tiny little box area. Though sometimes their phone doesn’t even work.

I’m thoroughly confused about the tax reviews in the tamales. They are TINY and massively over priced for the size. Taste wise they are extremely average. The only reason I’ll remember I ate them is because I’m so shocked everyone says they’re great. Otherwise they are just mid. Not bass, not good, but not memorable.
Now the BBQ on the other hand
Brisket is falling apart and moist. The ribs be outstandingly delicious. I was pleasantly surprised, sausage has a lot of flavor and their BBQ sauce is also really good and flavorful. For sides we got Mac n cheese and green beans. Green beans were good, Mac n cheese was a disgrace considering how good everything else was. It’s giving elementary school cafeteria. You can taste the chalky powdered cheese in it and zero seasoning. No salt or anything. I was unpleasantly surprised by that.
Honestly though the meats were so good I don’t even care about that. I just will not be ordering those items again. 100% this place competes with all awar the award places in Houston. Brisket is definitely better than Truth BBQ and The Pit Room.
I’ll definitely be back.

Wonderful little island secret. I love the Brisket and the baked potato. The green beans are my favorite, though. I’ve only gotten to go but the outdoor area looks nice and cozy.

The 3 meat plate is my go-to, I can’t choose just one..

Wow. Outstanding. The brisket was so flavorful and tender. I was able to cut it with a plastic fork! Second, award winning hot tamales, very good. Great taste!
This is a quaint “hole in the wall” place in a neighborhood. Highly recommended for takeout though they do have a few outside tables for seating. Note: limited hours. I also noticed tons of “regulars” buying food. The staff was very friendly and courteous…knew their customers by name.

Day after a holiday so choices were limited but I wanted brisket and that is what they had. The brisket was most excellent, can’t remember where I’ve had better. Take away only so no trouble for us. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Luckily our short term rental is 2 blocks otherwise I don’t think I’d discovered Pennie’s. We’ll return every time we visit Galveston.

I’m not a tamale gal, but I am a Pennie’s tamale gal! My friends suggested this place after they saw it on the Texas Bucket List show. This is a tiny little tamale hut in a house looking type structure off the Seawall in Galveston. This is a pickup place only. There is no space to dine. The entrance is literally only able to hold 6-7 people, and that would be tight. The 4 of us were inside and another 2 came in, so I very well know the size of the space.
We arrived right before closing so they only had the pork tamales left. The service was great even though they were about to close, and the tamales were piping hot. We ate in the car since we were all so hungry. The tamales were delicious! Like I said, I’m not a tamale fan, but I am a fan of this place! The salsa is Smokey and perfect as a topper. I will be back. Great job, guys!

Hands down, the best tamales I’ve ever had! You can taste the love and tradition in every bite—fresh, perfectly seasoned, and wrapped with care. The masa is light and flavorful, the fillings are generous, and everything tastes like it was made in a true family kitchen. These tamales are on another level—comforting, authentic, and absolutely delicious. If you want real, homemade flavor, this is it!

My wife and I are from California and just got off our cruise. I have been dying to try some Texas BBQ and a few locals told me that I won’t find it here in Galveston. Oh how they were wrong! I kept hope and found Pennies! I wish I could give this place 10 stars. The staff is super nice and friendly and make you feel like family. On to the food. The ribs, brisket, and chicken almost made me cry. I had to stop myself from licking my fingers after every bite. The coleslaw was also so damn good. The photos I took don’t do it justice because I was already tearing it up. On top of that, Cameron blessed us with some pork tamales that were out of this world. The masa was perfectly soft and their flavor reminded me of Christmas. ON TOP OF THAT, they had this awesome chocolate dessert that my wife and I were fighting over. If you are a true chocoholic like me, you cannot skip it. I wish this place expanded to California, but if not, best believe we will be back when in Galveston. Cameron and team, thank you guys for some stellar food! Much love!

Food was very good!!! I had a brisket taco and some Mac and cheese. It was delicious and the salsa was tasty and had a nice little kick to it! Staff are very courteous and nice and even let me try out some of their tamales, which are delicious as well ❤️‍ Highly recommended and will have to visit again soon.
