I called ahead and was told: “Sure, no problem.”
I place the order on Postmates (delivery), then call back to confirm the switch. That’s when the manager hits me with:
“Oh sorry, it’s $1.75 extra per dinner.”
Now let me be super clear: I’m not arguing over $1.75 like it’s my retirement plan. I’ll pay for upgrades all day.
What I won’t do is pay $1.75 for something your own menu says is a $0.50 difference… especially when it’s the same size soup.
So I asked the obvious question: Why is the upgrade (350%) higher price than the actual price difference?
And I got a hella excuses:
1. “The combo is discounted, so we have to charge more.”
Respectfully… what? That’s like me buying a value meal and you charging extra because it’s a value meal.
2. “Hot & sour has more ingredients.”
Okay. Where are you shopping—Erewhon? It’s tofu, mushrooms, and a couple sprouts. It’s not truffle foam. Chill.
3. “Labor cost is higher, we make it from scratch.”
It’s a restaurant, you have labor costs. I’m giving you money for you to make it, not me. Are you charging me for the chef’s emotional journey?
4. “It’s different from the menu soup.”
So I said, “Ohhh got it — for $1.75 more I get a bigger soup.”
Manager: “No sir, same size.”
…BRUH.
My problem:
-You approved the swap before I ordered
-You disclosed the fee after I ordered
-The menu shows ~$0.50 difference
-You wanted to charge me $1.75
-Same size, same combo, nothing else changes
……And nobody could explain it in a way that makes sense.
I even said I’m willing to pay a fair upcharge — but this wasn’t “upgrade pricing,” this was “because we said so” pricing.
After years of delivery fees, paying extra for sauces, and getting stingy with basics on large orders, it’s honestly impressive to lose a loyal customer over a $1.75 charge you can’t logically justify.
I’m sure you work hard. I’m sure customers can be difficult. But this was the most unintelligent conversation I’ve had with a business in a long time.
Never again.
(Will miss the NYC style Chinese food, even if other dinners found roaches in your food.)
I hate to come here do this review because I used to like the food. I got a take out for me and my boyfriend and everything was fine. When I was eating the food I was something weird and I couldn’t believe that was a piece of roach inside my food. I have fobia with roaches and got even worse now. I have abdominal pain and I feel nauseous, but what scares me the most is that I may have eaten the other piece of the insect without realizing. They refund the money but I still think that is not enough
