Having returned from my trip to Colombia I was looking forward to sinking my fangs into a pan de bono or pao de queso. Excited I dashed in right as the door opened on a Saturday morning and got the vegetarian options for brunch – the cheesy bread, two empanadas, and the breakfast burrito with the request to remove the bacon.

The paos, while chewy, were quite eggy in their taste. I found it ambiguous in flavor. I wanted to love them, but it wasn’t working as well. The same went with the empanadas. They were flaky on the outside but lacked a nice flavor profile on the inside. When the burrito finally came out I dug in. The hot sauce really amplified things until I felt weirded out. I spat out a piece of meat. It turned out either the restaurant forgot to mention there was sausage in the meal, or the person preparing the meal decided to sub the bacon with sausage. They were nice enough to switch it out to a vegetarian version for no charge, but in the time and age and in this part of the world, one cannot afford to be this lackadaisical about food substitutions.

The place is charming and bright and is definitely a magnet for more hangouts.

Finally made it over to Paulista Brazilian Café, Kitchen & Taproom yesterday with my family after it being on our list for a while. Overall, really enjoyed it

We brought my nieces along and really appreciated the expansive, completely separate kids menu — they love açaí bowls so that was a big win. Everyone seemed happy with their food too — we tried empanadas, cheese balls, a shrimp bowl, breakfast burrito, omelet, etc., and everything got positive reviews.

I ordered the Floripa sandwich after an employee recommendation. Flavor was good, but honestly the portion was disappointing — the patty was basically slider-sized and noticeably smaller than the bun, so it didn’t feel very filling. Fries portion was on the smaller side too. After reading some other reviews, it seems like others have had similar feedback on sandwich portions, so hopefully that’s something they consider improving.

That said, great beer selection (they even had Pliny the Younger on tap recently, so you know they take craft beer seriously). Lots of cans/bottles available to drink there or take home. Ambiance was nice, family-friendly, and I noticed a few people working on laptops — seems like a solid casual hang/work spot too.

We’ll be back — just maybe not for a sandwich.

Super cute and inviting Brazilian eatery with loads of options for every palette! We came in as vegetarians and happily found empanadas, omelettes and a burrito that could be made vegetarian. The empanadas we found to be lacking in flavor but the burrito and pao de queijo were enjoyable. They also seem to have a full coffee and liquor/wine/beer bar. 250+ beers ! I’d come back to try their wine and beer menu.

This restaurant has a lot of variety and the food was okay at best. I think the food just need more pop of flavor.

This was our first time at Paulista. The restaurant is a counter service, so you order and then bring a number to our table. We ordered 3 different dishes, 2 of which I tried.

Steak Sandwich – Delicious steak and side salad, however portion was on smaller side. Side salad dressing was superb.

Fried Chicken Bowl – This bowl had veggies, avocado, crispy fried chicken, rice or spring mix, and feta. This bowl was amazing mixed up with a dash of their homemade hot sauce.

Overall, prices are on the higher side – but that’s expected for the Bay Area and what tasted like quality food. A great spot if you’re looking for a healthy and quick lunch!

Great beer menu, friendly staff. The Sandwich i got was good, but not great. But the beer menu made up for it and I’d go back and try some other food next time for sure.

Paulista has been on my list of places to try as it’s not far from me and I’m a huge fan of Brazilian food.
When you arrive you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. We ordered the pizza pastel, yucca fries, a coconut based shrimp stew dish, feijoada, Guarana, and a smoothie which came to about $90 after tip.
The pizza pastel was good flavor wise but not a pastel and more like an empanada, the yucca fries were also good. However, our main dishes lacked flavor, which was a surprise as I’ve always had such flavorful dishes at every Brazilian restaurant I’ve been to. The feijoada was the worst I’ve had ever! It was vegetarian which I didn’t order to begin with. There was no flavor, the rice was bland, and the yucca flour was also bland and lacked any flavor.
Minus the girl at the counter who took our order, the service we received was fine. Sadly, I don’t think I will be returning to this place and will stick with my go-to tried and true Brazilian restaurant in the Bay Area that never fails.

Been wanting to try Brazilian food for a while. Was torn between this shrimp coconut dish and fejoida. Got recommendation to go with the latter. When it came out, I felt a little underwhelmed about the amount of food. Bit as you can see from the pic, plenty left over and I’m full lol

My favorite cafe in Oakland. I come here almost weekly now. Great selection of plates, pastels, bowls and beer. I recommend everything in their menu from the pão de queijo and queijo e presunto pastel to the feijoada and bobó de camarão. Their acaí bowls hit the spot on a hot day, salads are delicious, breakfast bowl amazing, coxinhas tasty and bite size, and they have a very large selection of beers on tap and in cans/bottles. I always leave with a few pastels to-go to munch on throughout the week. Can’t recommend this place enough. Plenty of street parking too.

Excellent Brazilian cafe! Flavorful, fresh, and delicious cuisine! Lots of treats and pastries to enjoy. The empanadas were flaky, yet soft and packed with tasty delights. Mango toast was an inviting presentation with a surprising explosion of flavor at first bite! Ample seating, family friendly, and has a nice little patio outside to enjoy your meal al fresco. Owner Alex Yamamoto was very welcoming and courteous and took the time to talk with his patrons and ensure their meal and experience there was enjoyable. This place should definitely be put on any “foodies” bucket list. Bon Appetit!
