We ordered for a big party: 2 trays of pulled pork, BBQ chicken, mac n cheese, potato salad, and cole slaw, 1 tray of baked beans – all the sauces fixin’s too! OMG, everything was soooo good, that pulled pork was juicy and flavorful, the mac n cheese was out of this world, cole slaw was perfect as a side or complementing the pork on a bun.
The business is basically a drive in, order at the window and take it to go.
Highly recommend and will be a customer for life!

As soon as you take a whiff of the smoking meats you know what you’re in for. Ring the bell for the smell.
Right off a highway, this is definitely worth pulling over for. Everything is scratch made with love. The pulled pork sandwich was hearty, smoky, tender, and delicious. The potato salad, green beans, and coleslaw were also very good. Highly recommend the cucumber salad if they have it as a special because it’s a great acidic contrast to the heavy BBQ.

I hadn’t been to this amazing barbecue shack in 10 years. We went back 2 days ago, and it was as fantastic as I remembered. The first time we stopped it was because we were driving by and could smell the heavenly scent of authentic BBQ. The smokers are right out front. There’s also picnic tables with umbrellas to sit at.
We got the ribs and the pulled pork and both were absolutely amazing. The mac and cheese is to die for. The baked beans were the best I’ve ever had. We also got banana pudding for dessert and it was delicious!
We showed up at the end of the day, so they didn’t have any thick ribs left. When we picked up our order they let me know the deal, and made sure to let me know they threw in extra bones since they weren’t as thick as they wanted.
Ordered half rack and got 10 bones. You can’t ask for a better business than this. It wasn’t their fault, and I would have been happy regardless, but they made sure I was a happy customer.
We got a chance to talk with the owner and his son, and they were fantastic. Great guys!

I would give them 10 stars if i could. the man was professional, the food was very good, and his wife hand delivered the desert and was very friendly.

Best BBQ in Nelson and the surrounding counties. HUGE sandwiches that I split with another. Sides are excellent. The slaw is unconventional because it’s chopped so finely, but it’s excellent. Occasionally, there will be smoked, pulled pork tamales, don’t sleep on these. They’re good and they’re huge as well. The folks working there are very nice. There’s only outdoor seating. Highly recommend.

My wife and I picked up lunch before heading to Swananoa and were both really impressed. The smoked chicken had deep flavor and the pulled pork was delicious. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the slaw but that was outweighed by everything else.
The portions are MASSIVE. We should’ve just shared a single platter because we were throwing in the towel halfway through the meal. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth.
Another thing worth noting is how fast they were cranking out the food. There was a decent line and we got ours within 5 minutes of ordering.

Owners were very nice and cordial, helpful/patient, etc. The texture of the meat was good. Portions extremely generous for the price imo.
The flavor of the either the smoke and/or rub was different than what I am used to down South, but my wife really liked it. It was something different though and glad we stopped to try it. Check it out!

I’m really not sure how people like this. The ribs are so dry. The Mac and cheese is just mush, it didn’t even taste like cheese just severely overcooked noodles. The slaw, I’m willing to bet is store bought, which is fine. The pulled pork was maybe a 2/5, lacked flavor but wasn’t offensive like the mac. The service was fine and super quick. They have a few picnic tables off to the side for people that don’t want to eat in their car. I wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t eat here again. I’m from NC and have lived in TX, safe to say I’m not going to try VA bbq again. Two stars bc service was quick and was edible.

BEST BBQ EVER!!!! they have been an establishment for almost 15 years and it’s clear as to why. Their bbq is out of this world!!! They have two smokers outside that were cooking food as we arrived. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich platter which came with two sides. We devoured the pulled pork, coleslaw and macaroni salad. We also ordered a half rack of ribs which literally fell off the bone! The hot bbq sauce was so so good. We also ordered a side of deviled eggs which had a good kick of horseradish probably. If we are ever in Virginia again we are 100% coming back to Paulie’s Pig Out!!! Best BBQ we have ever had!
