I ordered the In-N-Out style burger, and it was delicious and dare I say perfect!
I ordered it bloody and it was Mooing.
The top, bottom and sides were perfectly seared all around a the inside a nice red juicy bloody mess. Perfectly rounded patty, not too thin, not too thick. Truly a take on the
In-N-Out style burger that would give
In-N-Out a run for their money.
I also ordered the garlic fries and it made my City Boy Soul smile with fond memories of being at the Giants game.
This service was absolutely amazing.
They actually gave a crap about my order.
I don’t know what these people are being paid, but they deserve more. I can tell you that.
I avoided this place for a while because it’s always super busy but now I see why. I would absolutely come back again and brave the crowds.
Great job y’all. This is my favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz now.
Also, I saw a plate of wings being served to someone else and they looked absolutely tempting.
Chips 5/5
Brother. These have to be the best fries I’ve had on this review journey. Crispy outside, soft inside. Great flavor. Amazing making amazing
Fish 3.5/5
Great batter. Massive portions. Great taste. They don’t do cod unfortunately but give massive filets of salmon. It’s a bit of love and hate. The salmon is great at first but can become overwhelming in a few bites. Cod has a milder taste that serves as a good canvass for the tartar sauce. Still very good, best if shared.
We got the pickles and garlic fries. Great big portions. No coleslaw. Didn’t have vinegar at the table but I’m sure they would’ve gave me some if asked.
4.3/5 Overall fish and Chip score
The food is very good and it seems there’s a good selection. Lots of sandwiches, a bit of appetizers and some entrees themed for Irish bars, it reminds me of a Rosey McAnns. I go here for wings (wing stop is next door and a good competitor but it’s not as unique and it’s not a bar). The wings are great bc they are fried so they are crispy. Also theres also a lot of sauces to pick from. I recommend Honey Stung it’s sweet and spicy. The top 2 hottest flavors are OK. They are very spicy but have a chemical flavor bc the peppers are so spicy (like pepper spray, but I like intense heat so I can appreciate the flavor, others may not like them). The tables are clean and the bathroom is mostly clean as well. I like the wallpaper in the bathroom. They have some board games to play, but last I checked there were many pieces missing. Maybe bring your own game to avoid heartbreak. They have a lot of very good cocktails, the Paper Plane is very refreshing. They even have little barrels of booze they are flavoring, I like seeing them. They also have a lot of beers on tap, beers in bottles and a full bar. They even have cider on tap, to me that shows they are trying to be diverse. I tried Bullet Bourbon here for the first and it’s quite an excellent whiskey. You can spend time here like it’s a real bar (although I don’t like it when ppl bring their children, but that’s not up to me so I make due).
Okay, so that’s most of the positives. Now I need to get into my strange relationship with this pub. The very first time I went here I had an incredibly bad experience. I was with someone who knew the cooks and I think what happened was supposed to be a joke between friends, but to me it was an incredibly bad experience. I ordered a plate of wings and I wanted more sauce on the wings. They took the plate back and only added parsley on top of the wings, then the cook brought the plate out and slammed it down in front of me causing the sauce (they did not add any sauce like I politely asked for) to splatter onto my face and my shirt. I walked out and refused a free drink the waitress offered (I think she knew I did not think that was a good joke). My friend tried to explain that he knows the cook and it was supposed to be a joke. No, I do not think bad service or being rude is funny or entertaining. My friends went to Dicks Last Resort and I WOULD NEVER EVER GO THERE IN A MILLION YEARS. I walked out and I went next door and ate at Wing Stop even though I thought their wings were not as good. I did not set foot in that building for at least 8 years. After 8 years I ended up going back bc my dates wanted to go there. Those 2 times I went back it was standard, not good not bad, not awful not great, just standard.
This last visit I had some negative things to say. And this is why I said I feel they are not ready to help ppl who are not regulars. One particular waitress seemed to only be helping 3 ppl, one of whom seemed to be the owner/manager and another her boyfriend/friend. The problem was there was only 1 waitress, I had to flag down the bartender to orde. I felt I had to go out of my way to make an order or even be acknowledged. I wrote a very long and negative review about that but I deleted it bc I felt a certain way. The wings however were just as wonderful as I had remembered and this time no one threw the plate at me. The way to fix the problems I pointed out would be to try and find ppl who don’t do the Santa Cruz thing. What do I mean? It’s like how in Hawaii they have island time and you kinda just have to figure out a way to deal with that. Another example: Day after new years I was able to order sushi in San Jose at 1 am, that is something that would never ever happen in Santa Cruz. I’m out of space but it’s a good and bad spot to eat.
