10 years ago, our family came from Mexico City, MX and brought with them a passion for baking bread and pastry for 40 years. They brought recipes that took traditional pan dulce and made them just a bit better. Maybe a lot better! Better ingredients and small adjustments to standard pan dulce recipes made a huge difference to the final product. We love what we do, and you can taste it in every bite. We continue to study baking techniques around the world and are bringing more variety to the traditional pan dulce options. You will find a mix of Europe and Mexico on our menu. Don’t be fooled! Even if it looks like the one you have eaten since you were a child, you will be surprised at how good our pan dulce tastes.

There’s also a nice little spot to sit, have some coffee, and enjoy your pan dulce. Love coming here!
Came here to force a friend into eating before their relative’s funeral. They asked “isn’t it expensive…” 2 stale doughnuts were $10. That was more than the price of 2 coffees. I’d heard the stories about ridiculous pricing, but we had time to kill. It’s cleaner here, they have an expensive coffee machine & an indoor bathroom, but with these prices, we’ll be going elsewhere. Indoor seating is wheelchair accessible, but their doors are not.
El Fénix was closed, so we gave this place a shot. Granted, we came at noon, not morning. We don’t expect freshly made bread at this hour, but the croissant tasted like it was a day old. It was consistent with the other reviews critical of the staleness.
We also tried the glazed donut and felt it didn’t have enough density. It felt too airy and the inside felt like it was beginning to harden. Maybe it was only a few hours old, but this donut is not like fine wine: it does not age gracefully.
The cheese empanada kept the theme of disillusionment by lacking enough cheese. It could’ve been saved if the pastry was softer and flavorful, but I think you know where this is going.
On a scale from 1-5, these all earned a 1. But like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, there was a plot twist: the biscuits.
I take pride in being a biscuit aficionada as someone who always tries a bakery’s biscuit offering. When I saw the biscuit behind the glass, it was unassuming in appearance with a slight shiny glaze and a crisp to the exterior. Biscuits are usually best when they’re closer to the time they’ve been out of the oven, so I didn’t have high expectations. Then I bit into it and found a delightful upset. The bread had a thin and flaky crust enveloping the soft, buttery center.
This was a perfect 10. It could’ve redeemed the experience, but it went downhill when we got to the cash register. I’ll admit, it was our mistake to not check the pricing before loading up the goods, but in all the bakeries I’ve been to, you pay per pastry. At Paris Bakery, they charge per pound. Just the four pieces of pastry came out to about $9.50.
Do you know that a study once found that patients who experienced a mistake by their doctor tended to only pursue lawsuits against doctors with bad bedside manners? (Google it and you’ll find it.)
All this to say, that while the product was unfulfilling, our visit would’ve had a silver lining if the customer service was better. The woman behind the counter seemed busy and perhaps a bit tired. I know it’s hard work to be on your feet for hours, so I feel for anyone who experiences this. Although she projected a compulsory greeting upon our entrance, there was no assistance after that. I was a bit confused when trying to find the clean trays and tongs. I took the only ones I saw, although they looked like they’d been used. It’s fine if we’re not told where everything is at, but a little sign would’ve sufficed. When we finished with our selection, we went to the counter to pay. It’s hard to explain why, but it felt like we were annoying the woman and that was before I asked her to repeat the price. Other than that question — to which I responded with a ‘wow’ — we weren’t trouble customers.
A little courtesy would’ve gone a long way.
