I had an extremely disappointing experience at this shop. I’ve been buying birthday cakes for my kids from Paris Baguette for years, but this year’s experience was by far the worst and genuinely shocked me—in a bad way.
The store had plenty of seasonal cakes on display, and since none of them had cute birthday designs, I picked a holiday-themed one. I simply asked if they could switch the “Happy Holiday” sign to “Happy Birthday.” Not only did they refuse without any effort to help, but they handed me a tiny “Happy Birthday” chocolate sign that was thinner than my finger and told me I’d have to buy any other sign myself. This level of inflexibility was surprising for a bakery I’ve supported for so long.
It got worse. When they asked if I needed candles, I said yes. They packed only five. When I asked for a few more—because my child is obviously older than five—they refused again and told me I needed to purchase extra candles, even though the store had plenty available right in front of me.
Just a warning: if you’re buying a birthday cake for anyone over age 5, expect to pay an extra $8 for additional candles and any basic birthday decoration. Nothing beyond the bare minimum is included.

I had the amazing fruit pastry and jumbo twisted donut and both were unbelievabely tasty. The store itself has a nice layout, I see some room for improvement such as better placing for the chairs and tables. The sweetners and cuttlery were not available for the customers and you had to specifically ask for them at the counter. Some of the holiday cakes had cracked top layer and that made me think maybe those were old.
I loved the fact that the calories were posted on the pastry’s name labels. I hope those were accurate otherwise now I need to go on some serious diet, LOL!

I ordered a Blueberry Chiffon cake for my sister in law’s birthday. To our very unpleasant surprise, the cake came with a HOLE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAKE. My sister in law was shocked to see a hole in her cake and thought it was a mistake for sure. I went back today to talk to a manager, and to my more unpleasant surprise, she said that was just the design of the cake. This seems so ridiculous to me because a hole in the middle of a cake is actually such an insult to anyone who’s celebrating a birthday. I don’t know why anyone would be okay with a hole cake, but I want to say this seemed like a such a waste of my money.

If you love sweet pastries, then this is the place. It’s a new nice addition to San Mateo Downtown.
The store is big and spacious, with two separated area, the bakery display and the dining area. Clean and well organized shop. On my first visit, which is 8:30 pm, the store was still packed inside and no more tables available. Your only choice then was to takeout.
A wide variety of French-like pastries croissants, muffins and cute little sweet treats. They also serve sandwiches, either cold or hot.
Many lovely decorated birthday cakes displayed in the glass display at the cashier. I think we have a new place added to the list to buy birthday cake this year.

Love the variety of pastries, breads, and sweets. The service is great, fast and friendly. The atmosphere is open to chill, read a book, or just coffee stop with the family. I give a 5 stars because it has a baby changing station.

I’ve noticed some recent low ratings for Paris Baguette San Mateo, including one that mentioned mold in a cake. Yikes. I really hope the team addresses that quickly and tightens up quality control. In my own experience, though, the food has been solid with no complaints. The pastries I’ve tried have been fresh, the coffee consistent, and service friendly and efficient. Orders come out as expected and the shop feels clean and welcoming. I’ll keep an eye on how they respond to those concerns, but based on what I’ve actually had here, it’s still a solid 5 stars in my book.

Very good quality for the bakery items, and their coffee is pretty good. However, there needs to be a system, where you just don’t stand at the counter. Waiting for your coffee to come out, keeping the people behind you from paying just for their bakery items. Or Pete’s. Other than that, it’s amazing place.

Excellent selection of pastries and baked goods. You just grab a tray and pick whatever you like. Good selection of coffee and teas. I ordered cappuccino with NY cheese cake. My daughter had the Blueberry cake, which was very good! A very nice bakery!

This place is located right in the heart of San Mateo. Paid street and structure parking only. Lots of indoor seating available. There is no outdoor seating here.
There are lots of breads and desserts to choose from. Pair it with a delicious cup of coffee. Great place to hang out and enjoy the food.
