Rooting for this well-run Outback location to hold the line while others have sadly closed in Northern Virginia. We’ll be back!
Also want to note I wasn’t giving any dinnerware or napkins, that may have just been an oversite, but considering the meat, it was best to use metal instead of plastic utensils. I think I am going to wait another 30 years before I try them again….not. This review will serve as a reminder.
As for the food, it was just okay. While everything was prepared as expected, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the flavors or presentation. It satisfied our hunger, but didn’t quite impress the way we had hoped.
That said, the excellent service made a big difference and definitely elevated the overall experience. If the kitchen catches up to the quality of the front-of-house staff, this location has the potential to be a real standout.
Quality and portion sizes seem to be slipping lately though. On my most recent visit with a few friends, I wasn’t super impressed. One of us splurged on a ribeye, which came out looking quite small and thin versus the supposed weight boasted on the menu, and was ordered medium rare but came out more like medium well — he’s not the type to complain though, and chose to just eat the steak rather than send it back and stare at the table for 20 minutes waiting for a replacement while the rest of us ate our dinners.
I got the appetizer sampler to share along with the $15 “Aussie three course meal,” and the sampler was good, but my house salad was noticably full of unpleasant bruised and wilted lettuce that I had to pick through to remove — seemingly tucked at the bottom as if to purposely hide it under the fresher mix on top.
I also decided to try one of their new (or at least new to me) “take home dinners” that I’ve heard about all these chain restaurants adding to their menus lately, because I knew I would be too busy to cook later that night and it seemed like a decent convenience play. At Outback it’s basically $10 for an entree that’s your choice of protein (sirloin steak, chicken, shrimp, etc), over your choice of a “base” of potatoes, rice, alfredo pasta, or greens — with an option to add on salad and bread for another $2.
Sounded like a great deal, but as you can see in the photos it’s not much of a “deal” at all — the Caesar salad I took home had like 3 small croutons and the tiniest two-finger pinch of parmesan cheese, which is all there really is to a Caesar salad, so it was basically just a plastic container with a handful of wilty chopped romaine looking pretty pathetic. Not quite as pathetic as the main event though, for my sirloin steak over alfredo pasta, with one tiny piece of “steak” about 3.25 x 1.75 inches (chip clip for scale in photo), barely over 3 ounces on my scale, with a decent portion of pasta that tasted good enough (but we all know that’s the cheap filler.)
Our waiter also failed to include the desert item (cheesecake if I remember correctly) that was supposed to be the third course in my “Aussie three course meal,” which I had asked to take to-go towards the end of the meal, and which I’d assumed they had packed into my carryout bag along with my aforementioned “take home dinner” order. I didn’t think to check the bag at the restaurant, so I only realized this up on getting home and unpacking what was in the bag, long after it would have been worthwhile to go back and complain.
Recently did an order to go from this Outback and was pretty disappointed with the kids meal
Started off poorly with challenges ordering on the website. After two failed attempts on the site, we had to call in the order. When I arrived at the restaurant, the order was not ready, but that is to be expected on a Friday at dinner time.
The To-Go team was great! When they could not find my order they offered to buy me a drink at the bar while they resubmitted it to the kitchen. I was very disappointed that the bar did not stock root beer.
Once the food was ready I was able to check out quickly, again due to great servers.
When I got home, I was sad to see the state of the chicken strips. They were more like leftovers than a $15 meal.
I should have called to complain, but it was not worth driving back to get another subpar meal.
If “Foster’s is Australian” for beer then “Outback is Australian for bad kids meal.”
