Dear restaurant patrons: treat yourself well
Also: the Valentino appetizer (prosciutto and fresh burattini) ingredients also tasted good when added to my eggs the next morning. Great way to think about the Osteria Aventino THE NEXT DAY. Smooth!
The food was fantastic, and the wine list (which is continuing to grow with carefully curated options) was equally impressive. There are so few restaurants in Canada that make you feel not just welcome, but encouraged to linger, relax, and truly enjoy the company you’re with. It very much felt like being in Italy.
I’ll definitely be visiting this gem again!
My fiancé’s steak was perfectly cooked and so flavourful. I had the gnocchi and it was phenomenal.
We both agreed throughout our experience that we would be back.
Definitely recommend!
We were greeted by a lovely ambience and seated promptly.
We placed our order within the first ten minutes of sitting down. At the time there was one other couple seated at the restaurant snd a gentleman seated at the bar but over the course of the next hour, two other couples entered the restaurant. In total including myself and my husband, there were 9 people who were patrons of the restaurant at the time.
We got some bread as a free appetizer within the first half hour of our wait – it was excellent with a lovely crunch and soft interior.
By the 45-minute mark, I was ravenous. The server had not come to inform us about the status of our orders (no apps or drinks, just a gnocchi and chicken parmigiana), and my husband’s water glass was empty.
Just past the 1-hour mark, I was tired and hungry, and now, really annoyed at not having any update about our food.
I got up to ask the server for an update, and he said the food would be right out, which it was. I took a picture of my parking session to mark the time our food arrived. When we first sat down at the restaurant there had been 1h24min left in my parking session and by the time the food came, we had 23min left of the session (pictured).
I asked the server if he could offer me any oregano for my gnocchi (perhaps an unconventional choice on my part, but I did want something flavourful to go with my gnocchi which was in a simple blush sauce with cheese). He told me they didn’t have oregano and advised that I try my dish first, before walking away. He did not offer me any other options, and there were no condiments on the table.
I was ticked off at this point. When he came back around to serve someone else, I asked for some olive oil and black pepper on the side. He obliged me, and later offered me some hot oil. I was glad to finally have some options but was wondering why he had not offered me these options when I had first asked for oregano – why did I have to brainstorm possible condiments they might have on hand…?
At this point it just felt like too little too late. The service was lacklustre at best, and hostile at worst. It felt like we were not wanted there and were simply expected to eat our food, not complain or ask for anything, and get out.
To boot, part of my husband’s pasta (pictured) was not cooked. The pieces are sticking together at the edge of the plate, as you can see.
Really bad experience for an $80 dinner when we just wanted to relax and eat a hearty meal after hard days at work.
The gnocchi was really delicious though, generous portion, fresh, and the sauce was lovely.
The serving staff seemed a little green, however the place was packed on a Friday night, so we’re sure they will quickly find their footing.
Be sure to make a reservation.
The food was exceptional from start to finish: the grilled radicchio and house-made sausages were full of authentic flavor, the spaghetti with spicy tomato sauce was delicious and both the sea bass and veal Marsala were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. We had the lemoncello tiramisu – tiramisu is my favourite dessert and this one was a lovely variation – just perfect!
It’s rare to find a restaurant that captures the heart of true Italian cooking while creating such a warm, inviting atmosphere. A gem of a family-run spot that we can’t wait to return to!
