Reviews
Environment: First, the air conditioning was super cold. And it was blowing directly onto the table. We switched seats, which was slightly better, but it still got colder as we ate. Next came the invasive species: flies! Lots of flies, flying non-stop around our table. We had to shoo flies away while eating. The photo attached shows only 3 flies, but in reality, at most times there were 7-8 flies resting on the edge of the dinner plates and on the rims of the wine glasses, which was disgusting. In the end, I had to finish my food quickly, fearing a fly might accidentally fly into it.
Service: Then we called over a staff member (I guess this is a family-run restaurant, and the one communicating with us was probably the mom). She actually told me that Australia just has a lot of flies and they can’t be shooed away completely. I was instantly speechless. Can you tell your customers that? I can’t imagine if the front hall is like this, is your kitchen also full of flies and mice that can’t be driven away?
Both visits turned out to be way beyond expectation. Every dish is delicious BUT the bay bugs, pork and lamb with different cuttings are exceptionally good! The cook has his unique way of aging and preparing the meat, and his sauce adds a delicate balance to enhance the flavour.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Perth and Swan Valley!
Under the deft hand of Chef Justin Hughes, a former maestro of Rockpool, the menu showcases a seasonal rotation of innovative creations. Each dish is a testament to his artistry, featuring house-pickled vegetables and expertly dry-aged beef or quality lamb, all kissed by the flames of a wood fire that imparts a tantalising smoky essence. The emphasis on high-quality seafood further elevated our dining experience to extraordinary heights.
Among our favorite dishes were:
– Giniversity Cured WA Market Fish
– WA Ceviche
– Gwamby Grazing Lamb
– Shark Bay Scallops with Brussels Sprouts
– Smoked White Fish
– Churchill Rd Raclette Lasagna
– Oscar’s Eton Mess
– And the unforgettable Whiskey Mandarin and Walnut Pudding—simply wow!
The extensive local wine list is a treasure trove, offering a diverse selection that provided two bottles that beautifully complemented our dining experience. The airy dining room, enveloped by blooming fruit trees, vines, and olive trees, creates a relaxed yet sophisticated ambiance that beckons you to linger and make room for the never-ending feast that is bestowed upon you, so know you have been warned: our meal was extensive, delicious, and filling.
For those yearning for an authentic taste of the region, the chef’s tasting menu comes highly recommended, showcasing a generous array of culinary artistry. With attentive service and an unwavering commitment to quality, Oscar’s in the Valley is an essential destination for any food lover exploring the heart of Swan Valley. Ensure you make a booking as we did witness multiple groups of disappointed diners being turned away.
One of the staff was very accommodating, and explained the locally sourced produce for the menu and set tasting course to us as it was our first time at Oscar’s. We ended up going with his recommendation for the 4 course tasting.
Service time and hospitality were exceptional. Each course was spaced out to allow us enough time to savour and digest, without leaving us too long waiting either. Food was divine, all the seafood especially tasted very fresh and dishes were all well seasoned, with some dishes in each course acting as palate cleansers after the heavier / more rich dishes. The older server who brought out each dish, explained each plate with detail. And the two other male staff who greeted us at the start (one with the bun and the other with lighter hair) would often check up on the food and see if we needed anything else. The younger arts student and the older lady as well also served us and were very friendly.
In terms of the ambiance, it was lovely, with perfect blue skies and a cool breeze outside. While there were quite a few flies being a bit annoying, loved the openness of the place connecting with the rear exterior. Flowers in the back garden and the spring weather were perfect, especially for photos!
Overall, while a bit more on the expensive side, the food and experience at Oscar’s is well worth it. Would love to come back for the next special occasion. 🙂
The staff were friendly and attentive couldn’t do more for us but we wouldn’t come back simply because the food was so bad. Even the simple potato dishes were undercooked or just oily with no seasoning.
The cooked meat was cold and served nearly blue or rare. Which is not to most people’s taste. After spending over $300 for two people we left really disappointed with an upset stomach. Probably the worst meal we’ve had in Australia yet.
Which is a shame because the restaurant is lovely, minus the flys…
