The steamed warehou was delicate and beautifully cooked, the kingfish ceviche fresh and well balanced, and the cocktails were excellent — the Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and a classic Negroni both spot on. Easy, thoughtful seafood and great hospitality. I’d happily return.
Get ya self a booking lol
I’ve had my eyes set on trying this place for a while and have been recommended it by many Wellington locals only to be disappointed. Not only did we wait 1 hour for a table (not something we can fault them for as they were very busy and it was a Saturday night), however we waited nearly 2 hours for our mains!!! As we were sitting in the upper levels our order may not have been prioritized and I did feel for the staff given how busy they are but for the price you really would expect something better.
For starters we had the prawn pasta, ceviche and the white fish French toast. Let’s start with portion size to price ratio, fine dining is expensive and portions are small but for a place to be considering fine dining the food has to outshine the price, and this did not do it. The French toast came out and the star of the show was the two pickle slices rather than the actual toasty which I would very lightly call it that as it was not toasted to crispiness and appeared rather soggy. It was alright tasting but more something you’d get at a fish and chip shop rather than at a restaurant. Also the portion size was tiny it was a quarter of a piece of toast per person (if not sharing then half a piece of toast which is ridiculous in itself).
Now the prawn tail tagliatelle is supposedly one of their most popular dishes, I was told that anything quite popular could be upgraded to a main. I counted, ONE strand of pasta not even a big strand either perhaps the size of my hand if that. Then 4 pieces of prawns which was alright but it literally just tasted like boiled prawns in garlic butter sauce, for anything above $24 I’d expect more!
Anyway the ceviche was good but mainly due to the cuts of the fish and not the actual sauce, the green cream (avocado?) was nice but other than that nothing special, once again the portion size was small.
Moving onto mains which took ages to arrive, the piece of snapper for almost $50 cannot genuinely be called a piece of snapper. It was 3 bites worth of snapper, and you have to pay extra for sides! Didn’t spot any of the aubergine they promised there either, disappointing.
Now onto the desert, I wanted to try the panna cotta which was described to contain honey and strawberries, something which I assumed could be innovative if done right. I was unfortunately disappointed, receiving a panna cotta with no sign of vanilla bean and a little bit of watery honey strawberry sauce with some cut strawberries on the side…
Drinks were watery and honestly cannot recommend. Stick to wine rather than spirits as that can’t be watered down with ice as easily.
