Well… This place was NOT on my radar until an Aggie recommended it to me during the recent Longhorns vs Aggies game. I’m a UT alumnus and avid Longhorns fan so perhaps the Aggie was just misleading me after the recent win at DKR Stadium on Friday.

Drove to Opie’s today from Austin and was very underwhelmed. Dry and flavorless moist brisket with no bark, no bite and overly smoky. Ribs also dry and flavorless despite being billed as sweet and spicy.

Bought jalapeño cheese sausage and chicken too but have not unwrapped it to eat yet. I was too disappointed with the other two meats to care about trying the other two.

Next time I’ll either just go to Franklin’s BBQ, Leroy & Lewis or any of the other BBQ places in Lockhart like Black’s or Smitty’s. Sorry Opie’s but you’ve got some work to do.

A no frills BBQ place on the route to Austin (71)
The BBQ is ok. Not great. Prices are fine.
At 4pm on a Saturday (November) the place was almost empty.
I had a brisket and a side of Mac n cheese.
Again, nothing to write home about. Maybe it was the time… Middle of the afternoon, but the meat was slightly dry.

Clean place, great barbecue, and very reasonable prices. The food was delicious and everyone in our family enjoyed it. Seating was comfortable and the atmosphere was welcoming. The owner was incredibly kind and even gave our kids T-shirts, which made the experience extra special. We’ll definitely be back.

What a blessing it was to find a great place to eat like Opie’s while on the road. We were doing deliveries in the area & were starving. As a truck driver we noticed they had plenty of parking for a semi. It was 3:30, unfortunately they were out of brisket. The owner was there & said they closed at 4 but he invited us in to eat a free lunch. My husband & I had the chicken, jalapeno sausage, Cole slaw, potato salad & pea salad. The chicken was fresh & juicy. I thought the jalapeno sausage would be too spicy for me, but it was flavorful with garlic & a slightly smokey taste. I loved the sides & was pleasantly surprised by the pea salad. I’m sure the staff was ready to get home but they never made us feel that way. Everyone was so nice & helpful. Thank you for EVERYTHING!!! Y’all made us North Carolinians feel right at home. We’ll be back when we’re in the area…earlier.

I thought it was delish! Great service and nice interior. I did all meat – jalapeno sausage, ribs, brisket – to go. The brisket melted in my mouth and was delicious. I would have liked saucier ribs, but that’s my preference. Sausage had a nice kick to it. Didn’t try any sides or desserts.

One of the best places I’ve ever been to for a classic Texas BBQ. We stopped by here because we’re moving to another state soon and this will definitely make me miss it. The brisket was so tender, the ribs had a beautiful glaze, the sides were wonderful, and the blackberry cobbler was the perfect way to end it. Even the sweet tea was classic super sweet Texas sweet tea.

This just became one of my favorite BBQ places! Me and my fiancée were here on Saturday about an hour before they closed. We got half a pound of brisket and half a pound of ribs and a side of tater tot casserole, potato salad, banana pudding, and blackberry cobbler. All of the sides and desserts were absolutely delicious. All I can say about the meats is that they were a little dry but it’s okay because we did come an hour before they closed and it tasted better with the BBQ sauce. Overall, we will definitely be back!

Omg! I smelled flavor the minute I walked through the door!! Having zero decent bbq places in Ruidoso NM, I was cravin’ some good ol! TX Bbq and I certainly found the right spot! Holy smokes. The pit master must have bbq running deep in his veins. It was moist and so tender. Barely had to chew it. The side of pintos were saucy with just the right amounts of spices. My pallet is super sensitive to flavors and the combination on the cowboy corn, sliced brisket and beans were just fantastic. I love reviewing places that have character. Down home. Easy. And most of all, about the best BBQ in Texas. I seriously mean that. I was from San Antonio back in the day. This beats everything I have ever had. And just stumbled on the place cause I had not eaten. Man. Delightful and Delicious. Hats off to the pit master. Genius. Please, try this place. Put it on your radar. On my way back to NM I am going to get some to take home. For sure authentic BBQ.
