I’ve been here several times over the years. I really want to like this place, but its a bit too inconstant for my likes. The food here is OK. It’s one of the better Hawaiian food chains on the mainland. However, the portions and the servings are inconstant. The first time I went here it was fine, like a true plate lunch back in Hi…they piled it on.

I got the BBQ & Katsu Mix & the Seafood Mix. I totally forgot to get sauce for either combo, good thing I didn’t need it because the food tasted good by itself.

#MidOnoEats:
~ BBQ & Katsu Mix Plate – 3.5/5
Nothing special.

~ Seafood Mix Plate – 3.5/5
Also nothing special.

The second time I went back I got Island Fire Chicken Aloha plate and the Kalua Combo & BBQ Chicken.

~ Island Fire Chicken Aloha plate – 3.5/5
This is where is goes all bad…The Island Fire plate is pretty good…a nice little kick to the chicken, but a bit skimpy on the portions, not enough chicken.

~ Kalua Combo & BBQ Chicken – 1.5/5 (2nd visit)
The Kalua Combo is a the same story. I think Ive only had good authentic Kalua Pork in one place on the mainland…a mom and pops in Redwood City and they only made it on the weekend…because it takes hours to make. The Kalua Pork was salty, dry and chewy…not moist and soft and did not fall apart or melt in your mouth. To top it off the portions were measly…barley any pork in there. Definitely stay away from this combo! absolutely terrible.

U can’t serve da kine…you gonna get cracked, kallin dat a plate lunch!!!

~ Coconut Haupia – 3.5/5
I also got the Coconut Haupia both times before. I though it was good, a bit different, but still good.

~ Kalua Combo – 2.5/5
It got a bit better, not as salty. Still not that good, not as tender or moist either.

~ Chicken Katsu Mini Meal – 2.5/5
What’s with the bright Orange breading?! Tastes a bit funky. meh…

Ono is NOT so ono for me, barley mid…
I stop here every now and then if they have some sort of promo, otherwise its a pass.

Just picked up oir dinner in 1706 Oakland Rd SJ and couldn’t be happier! Order was ready in minutes, piping hot, and perfectly packaged. The chicken was incredibly moist and flavorful, and they didn’t miss a single item. I love the steamed vegetables! Friendly, efficient service by Dulce—highly recommend! Good job!

Where Ono lacks a little bit in flavor, I feel like it makes up with consistency. They’re always super reliable. Their meats from the chicken to the ribs to the beef is always cooked like pretty on the dot. So I’m never disappointed when I have Ono’s. I do like Olilo’s on Hostetter a lot more because of the flavors but Ono’s is a super super reliable everywhere we go. Unlike L&L BBQ which is pretty garbage depending on which location you go to,

We always get the mixed barbecue late here and it’s always good. Their portions are generous and we can never finish it. I love that it comes with so much vegetables.

they DO NOT take cash – no signs so a heads up. Guy taking my order was ok but the center already sucks to drive through and had to go back because I hasn’t been there before and wasn’t told initially the katsu was self serve. All to get burnt food? No wonder they sent out coupons.

I had Hawaiian BBQ before but first time at Ono. Generally, I had a good experience and I’m open to come back.

I got
– A plate of Hawaiian BBQ mix (which is a mix of beef, pork and chicken). It comes with rice & macaroni salad. It’s pretty good. I like the flavors of all the meat. I like pork most, then chicken then beef. I like cabbage too but I wish it has less oil.
– A side of salad: I like the dressing that comes with the salad, helps balance the meal.
– Young coconut: decent. You can’t use the plastic spoon to scoop out the meat but if you go home and use a silver spoon, you can. It looks thick but it’s surprisingly not hard. It’s probably still better if it’s a little bit thinner though.

My friend got the plate with seafood mix which came with fried shrimps, fried white fish and chicken. I tried it and the plate I got was better.

Service was good. The receptionist was friendly and willing to answer all of my questions.

Ive gone here several times, never had an issue. But the last time I went which was around Dec 2025 I ordered the BBQ Mix plate. One of the beef meats was so foul and tasted disgusting. I had also got a side of teriyaki sauce and when I dipped it in, I almost threw up. I think the sauce was old. I went in and asked for replacement, and they kindly obliged. Workers were kind and understanding. But I couldnt even eat the plate after that. Its definitely tarnished my idea of Hawaiian BBQ and I hate that i wont be going back.

Ordered ahead and was set to pick up my order around lunch time.
I get there and was told it’d be another 5 minutes, which was fair it was near lunch time.
A solid 10+ minutes go by and I again ask if it’s ready soon and apparently my order was just sitting behind the counter because the cashier misread my name. Suffice to say the food at that point was warm at best and getting soggy.

Flavors aren’t bad at all but it could of been a lot better if I wasn’t made to wait an extra who knows how long since the food ready.

Ordered the Island Spice Grilled Fish because of the promotion which meant I only paid $7 + tax. The taste was good as usual. The restaurant was clean. The only complaint I would have is I was sitting down at a table waiting for my food to finish cooking, and when it was ready, they refused to bring the food to me despite me being the only person in the restaurant. This is not expected but for a 5 star rating I would expect them to do that when they can clearly see I was sitting down. I wish they gave the food in a Eat-In option when ordering through the mobile app.

It was very good, between 3 1/2 to 4 stars. The portion was generous, I couldn’t finish my plate. About $10 per order without drink.
