The FOOD is amazing! I’m vegan and this place had some unique options to try. I got the cauliflower steak and it was superb! My friend said it was easily thee best pork chop he’s had in his life! WOW! The owner of the restaurant made his rounds and asked us how everything was- that is true dedication and service, I LOVED that touch! We are eager to go back and try more of the menu.

Love this restaurant! They have a super creative menu that appeals to all sorts of different dietary goals. Plenty of healthy but tasty things on the menu. My butternut squash puffs were delicious. My partner had the skirt steak and it was really good!
The classic cocktails are all very good. Great service. Feels fancy without being pretentious. Had a great time for my birthday dinner last weekend!

Food wasn’t bad… some food tasted…fishy/gamey… We surmised that the fryer oil must be old… the French fries and croquettes tasted like crab cakes… which I love but did not order. The Steak was cooked to perfection!

Although this food is on the pricey side, it’s worth it. It is some buttery melt in your mouth goodness! The lamb shank was divine and worth every penny. We also did the gnocchi with crab and we did the salmon as well. Also the creme brulee and the chocolate tart are to die for! Also I’ve never had a mushroom tart quite like that. And the samosas were so delicious! The waiter told me everything was made on site and fresh and local. Highly recommend!

I’m celiac, and this place truly takes great care with allergies. I was able to order an actual gluten-free burger—and I’m severely allergic to gluten. I had the Guadalajara burger with a gluten-free bun, and it was excellent. The staff is knowledgeable about cross-contamination, and the chef clearly knows what they’re doing. We also tried the desserts, which were fresh and very well prepared.

Bonus: they even offer omelets at noon!

If I’m back in the area, I’ll absolutely return knowing it’s a safe option. The atmosphere has a fun, speakeasy-style vibe, too.

I ordered the lamb shank, and it was absolutely perfect. The meat was incredibly tender and melted in my mouth.

Very nice & delicious meal!
Celebrated our Anniversary & both meals were great.
The only downside was that our bill was over $100 for (2) glasses of wine & (2) basic entrées (chicken & salmon)
Again, not a big deal because everything was wonderful, just wish there was more food to eat!

This is billed as an upscale French restaurant. I don’t know if we caught them on an off night or what. The lamb was passable but I didn’t like the watery texture of the polenta. My husband had the hanger steak which was way overpriced for chewy meat and a huge plate of French fries. The desserts were delicious. They have an extensive wine selection and a full bar but no cocktail menu.

I really wanted to love the food at this higher dining place and unfortunately was disappointed. The restaurant has a cute old looking set-up in the heart of downtown Iowa City and they have some outside seating too. The service was excellent, our waiter was professional, answered all our questions about the menu, gave us time to decide, and checked to see if we needed anything several times. However, the reason for my lower rating was the food. We ordered the Vegan Thai Grilled Veg and the Lamb Osso Bucco and honestly they were nothing extraordinary like I was expecting, especially for the high price. The veggies on the vegan dish tasted fresh, but the rice was super oily and tasted more burned instead of fried, and although the coconut cream tastes okay the contrast to the other flavors didn’t seem to compliment the dish in my opinion. I liked how tender the meat was and the taste of the grilled asparagus on the Lamb Osso Bucco dish. But the polenta didn’t taste like it was freshly made, it tasted like a boxed mix and the amount of gravy/sauce on the dish was too much. We were considering ordering dessert but due to the disappointment from the entrees we changed our minds.

8/31/2023: I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my original review, and now I feel compelled to make a few comments regarding your response.

Firstly, my review didn’t say you didn’t make the food from scratch. I specified that the polenta on the Osso Bucco dish didn’t taste fresh and compared the taste to that from a box while also complimenting the tenderness of the meat and grilled asparagus. Secondly, just because you believe the Osso Bucco to be amazing and a French Italian guest and his wife were blown away by it, that doesn’t invalidate my personal opinion on the taste which was also shared by my friend. Regarding the fried rice, I have never in my life tasted fried rice that seemed burnt and so oily. Also, since it was our first time trying it at your place, we didn’t know we could request a less crispier option. Lastly, your comment about our server was uncalled for because regardless of what the server told you, my review was true to my opinion. I would like to highlight what you clearly overlooked in my review: I gave your place 5 stars for the service, 5 stars for the atmosphere, and 2 stars for the food, and my review specified in writing that the service was excellent and I complimented the professionalism of the server. I will also have you know that I am from a culture that despises wasting food and money, so yes we ate the food and took the leftovers. Who hasn’t eaten a meal they don’t like at least once in their life, especially when they paid good money for it?! We didn’t complain because we came in after a long day hungry and eager to try something new. Also, the food took time to be prepared and we didn’t want to complain and wait some more. But that doesn’t change my opinion on the food and us staying for a while after just means we were enjoying our conversation in the quiet atmosphere.

Our daughter and son-in-law recently held their wedding rehearsal dinner at 126 (in the private room upstairs). We cannot rave enough about the food, bar drinks, service, and ambience. Several people said the steak was the best they’d ever had. We highly recommend 126.
