This place is amazing. Shoutout Instagram Reels for bringing me here. I spent $5.88 for two onigiris (spicy tuna and salmon) priced individually at $2.80 and $2.60. Super affordable and delicious!! This is a gem tucked into a Japanese supermarket that contains an assortment of premade Japanese cuisine and Japanese food and home products. Next time I look forward to trying the tuna and mayo onigiri. The spicy tuna definitely took the cake between it and the salmon onigiri, although both were still good. My friend got a shrimp tempura onigiri which was also all the rage. They’re pretty big and filling. There’s no seating and it’s counter service so we walked 9 minutes to Battery Park and enjoyed our lunch there. I can’t wait to go back.

Omusubi Gonbei is a small food counter located inside Katagiri Japanese Grocery, by the entrance. there are a variety of omusibi (also known as onigiri), which are rice balls with a filling wrapped in nori (dried seaweed sheet). neatly arranged and labelled for customers to chose from. they have white rice balls or brown rice balls. i’ve tried a variety of omusubi from salmon to spicy tuna to shrimp tempura over the years and they are good. there are a lot of variety to choose from. whatever the filling is, the rice is the star of each omusubi as it tastes clean, fresh, sticky soft yet firm not mushy and the rice has it’s own natural flavor / sweetness that complements the filling but doesn’t detract from it. really like the spam musubi, here—are layers of flavors from the rice, nori, slice of egg omelette, to the fried spam. a savory comfort food in each bite. also really like the chasu pork omusubi–a thin slice of rich savory pork combined with rice and nori. if you’re in the Murray Hill / Grand Central Area…it’s worth a short walk to enjoy a snack or light meal of omusubi…plus you can get other meal and snack items items within Katagiri to enjoy with your rice ball. enjoy!

The onigiri is very small with minimal fillings or flavor, that is why it is so much cheaper. The tiny jello drink was reasonably priced ($1.99) and was good(I recommend getting a different flavor tho).It is a very small place and is usually crowded so keep that in mind.

It’s such a nice cute shop/eatery in midtown. The location is super convenient. Only one street south of the Grand Central Terminal.

I tried their nigiri for the first time. I got salmon, spicy tuna, shrimp, chashu, and mentaiko ones. The size was perfect. You can tell from the generic shapes that they are most likely hand made. Overall, it’s a little bland. Good thing was that they cook the rice perfectly, and after chewing slowly over and over, you can taste the naturally sweetness of the rice. They also put somewhat generous amount of stuffing inside.

I also got a spicy fried chicken don and a box of sushi. The spicy fried chicken was indeed quite spicy. The flavor was nice. The chicken pieces were also nicely cooked. It was about average. The sushi was actually surprisingly nice. I got it because of the after 7pm sale. All sushi was 15% off. The box I got had salmon roes, salmon, tuna, some kind of white fish, cooked shrimp, and eel. It also came with tuna and salmon rolls. It was pretty delicious.

It’s not only a takeout spot. There is a ramen restaurant hidden inside. It’s also like a bodega selling goods imported from Japan, including cosmetic products, fresh produce, drinks, and snacks. It’s such a cute shop. I’d like to come back and try their other items.

Love this place! You can get so many different types of onigiri for so cheap! One or two will fill you up enough for lunch. There are also so many drinks and premade meals to choose from for a decent price. Loved it!

Had really high hopes… Ordered a spicy tuna onigiri, which lacked both spice and tuna. It was practically all rice. If I had soy sauce it would have been more edible, except the lady at the register said “no soy sauce for rice balls.” Probably won’t return. Wish them the best though!

I went here to get onigiri after craving it for around a week. The food I ate here was SO GOOD. First, the store isn’t too far of a walk from the Grand Central station when you go inside the store looks to be pretty small, and although it is small it’s bigger than when it first appears. The photo shows I ate while I went around in Manhattan. I got shrimp tempura, ume, eel, salmon, chashew pork (I’m unsure of the spelling), spam musubi I believe it’s called, and some more stuff. Almost everything I bought was under 5$ and came up to 34$. And I can stay without a doubt that the food is most definitely worth the money. The shrimp tempura was delicious. The ume I believe it is, wasn’t really my thing but that’s not the fault of the food. The staff were very nice and that store was very clean and well taken care of. Normally, I don’t write reviews for places I’ve gone, but this is how good at this spot is I had to write about it. One thing I want to really highlight is the takoyaki octopus balls, they were near the middle of the store I was curious so I got them. now, of course, this is up to personal taste for but for me these things literally had me yelling with how good they were and I’m not even joking. The texture was very nice. It was chewy. The sauce was good. The stuff that was on It was delicious. The inside had like a small piece of octopus in it. All around one of my favorite things for that store and will definitely be buying the next time I go. 10/10 this store is fantastic.

Lived off of this place while in New York. Delicious food with great prices and the women making the onigiri are true experts at their craft! Hoping to see more gluten free onigiri options next time we visit, perhaps made with GF tamari. Thank you for excellent food and service.
