Reviews
What truly sets Omotenashi apart is the calibre of the hosts. Their knowledge is remarkable, not only of technique and flavour, but of the cultural meaning behind each dish. They share this generously, enhancing the experience without ever overwhelming it.
Service is seamless and deeply considered — attentive, warm and instinctive, embodying the true spirit of omotenashi hospitality. This is not just a meal, but a cultural experience shaped by people who clearly honour both their craft and their guests. I dined alone tonight but truly felt a part of a special family.
A standout in Hobart for anyone seeking something genuinely special.
A 10 seat kaiseki restaurant so you need to book well in advance: no walk-ins. And, uniquely, in the back of a Lexus showroom if you’re looking for a new car.
The dishes were superb and very authentic Japanese. My wife is from Japan and was delighted with everything. We sent pix to her family afterwards and they were amazed at just how authentic it was.
A standout dish is very hard to pick but the vegetarian chawanmushi, prawn sashimi, and hitomebore with bonito would certainly be up there. Everything else would be a very close second.
Sophie & Lachlan, along with Jordan, do everything and were great hosts – engaging, friendly, and knowledgeable. It shows that they researched for 2 years before opening. It was a treat to watch them preparing our dishes right in front of us.
It’s certainly not a cheap evening out but you get what you pay for. We thought every cent spent was worth.
Oishii!! And domo arigato.
It isn’t cheap, but you get the full experience. Each course is explained to you. The food is sourced with alot care and thought including sourcing ingredients from locals gardens which I loved.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a special and different dining experience. Putting aside the cost, this was excellent.
Go with a couple of friends to truly enjoy the experience.
It wasn’t just affectation either – these guys are the real deal which carried us all along on an authentic Kyoto style kaeseki dining experience infused with some unique Tasmanian ingredients and flare.
I loved the evening from start to finish. Thanks again guys.
Every meal is not just food, but a masterpiece, crafted with love and an unwavering passion for cooking. Each dish is a work of art, presented on exquisitely crafted tableware, the product of Japanese artisans.
Most of the ingredients are sourced from the local market, embodying the essence of Tasmania while maintaining the authentic Japanese flavour. This enchanting fusion captivates the palate and the soul.
We are utterly charmed by this experience and eagerly anticipate our next visit. 100% will come again, for the culinary artistry and the homage to tradition and quality.
The location also adds further atmosphere to the whole experience.
Nestled within the shared space of a Lexus showroom in Hobart, Omotenashi is not just a restaurant—it’s an experience, a journey through the artistry of Japanese Kaiseki-style fine dining, brilliantly reimagined by Chefs Sophie Pope and Lachlan Colwill. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere strikes a balance between relaxed intimacy and the quiet hospitality.
The setting itself is a unique contrasts to typical venues: sleek, modern luxury meets the warm, minimalistic charm typical of Japanese design – well it is a car Lexus showroom! As we ‘hung’ our coats in the 75K AUD repurposed coat rack ‘aka’ Lexus vehicle, we smiled at the seamless integration of the venue’s dual purpose – it worked really well. Attention to detail defines Omotenashi, where every aspect of the dining experience has been meticulously crafted.
The culinary journey began with a warm greeting from our chefs themselves, setting the tone for an evening of personal, yet refined service. We were served freshly brewed tea while we had a chance to explore the venue before start of service. Over the course of 15 courses, Sophie and Lachlan delivered a symphony of flavors that celebrated the finest local produce, prepared with the precision and respect that is the hallmark of Kaiseki cuisine.
Each dish was a revelation, a delicate balance of taste, texture, and presentation. The emphasis on seasonal ingredients means the menu is ever-changing, offering a fresh perspective each time you visit. It’s a style of dining that encourages you to truly savor the moment, to appreciate the fleeting beauty of each carefully composed plate.
The sake pairings were a highlight in themselves. Thoughtfully selected to complement the progression of flavors, they elevated the dining experience to new heights. For those who prefer other beverages, the menu also offers an impressive selection of wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options.
What sets Omotenashi apart, beyond the impeccable food and drink, is the genuine warmth and passion of Sophie and Lachlan. Their love for their craft is palpable (more certainly palatable), and it’s clear that they are not just chefs but artists, dedicated to bringing something truly special to Hobart’s dining scene. Their interpretation of Kaiseki is not only a tribute to Japanese culinary tradition but also a celebration of Tasmania’s rich bounty of local produce.
In Hobart city that is fast becoming known for its culinary scene, Omotenashi stands out as a beacon of excellence. It’s more than a meal; it’s a memory, a testament to the power of food to connect us to a time, a place, and to each other. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or simply someone who appreciates the finer things in life, a visit to Omotenashi is an experience not to be missed.
Sophie and Lachlan, we truly had an amazing dining experience and enjoyed it thoroughly. We wish you both all the very best in your future and culinary endeavours.
