In Japan, Omakase (お任せ) “entrust the chef” is a popular style of dining, where the guests entrust the chef with the meal selection. As this is a great honor, the chef in turn vows to use the freshest ingredients, masterful techniques and bursts of innovation, to create a truly memorable dining experience. Oma San Francisco Station is proud to present this simple, yet elegant way of dining to all of our guests.

Oma San Francisco Station – MICHELIN Guide

This simple wood counter serves some of the area’s better nigiri, right from the corner of a mall in Japantown.

Delicious food, we left feeling full and content. The service was lovely, and the fish was awesome. The atmosphere was certainly interesting as it’s against the wall of the mall. You enter from the west side of the Japan center mall, walk straight until you hit Andersen bakery then turn left and it’ll be on your right. Can be hard to find!

We got the Sakura omakase which came with 9 pieces of nigiri and some other things. Several pieces of nigiri were quite similar in taste and presentation, so it lacked the variety we were looking for.

Nigiri was amazing. You can see the attention to detail and each one had a unique taste. Loved the fish selection

Sashimi: I tried the ocean trout and I found it on the thicker style and I’m personally more of a fan thinner sashimi.

Atmosphere: not a surprise but this is a counter in Japantown not inside its own restaurant. The atmosphere doesn’t match the price. I also wish the counter was designed so I could see the chefs prep the food better.

I feel like the cost doesn’t match the experience. I recommend trying for yourself.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was the best experience ever! The chef makes EVERYTHING from scratch, even soy sauce and vinegar, and was so friendly and told us about his experiences growing up in HK and Japan. The food was soooo delicious!! Warning, it is a random shop out in the open in a mall, but I think it adds to the charm, just like in Japan where they have omakase in the subway stations ☺️☺️☺️☺️ Will be back!!

This Japanese restaurant is excellent! The food is fresh and delicious, with beautiful presentation—especially the sashimi and sushi, which are truly impressive. The staff is friendly and attentive, making you feel very welcome. The overall atmosphere is warm and cozy, perfect for dining with friends or on a date. Highly recommended!

Very friendly chef and is incredibly knowledgeable. Ingredients were high-quality and there was consistency across most dishes. Beautiful presentation all around. The sushi, for example, was really good. The fish was prepared perfectly. However some of the non-sushi dishes fell a bit flat. The eggplant dish in the first part of the Sakura set was the lowest point of the night (and also the start of the entire experience) but it was all up-hill from there. The eclectic fish choices were very interesting, as I was fully expecting to get Salmon or Yellowtail cut in different ways, but no. I was served fish I had never eaten before. I personally loved this. And, all of this fish were delicious.

The bar is located in the back wall of a mall. There is no wall in front of the bar, so it’s kinda really cold and a lot of people are walking buy or staring at you. I had to take points off for atmosphere here.

This was first experience of this nature and the chef definetly set the bar high. The fish was of excellent quality, O Toro was melt in your mouth amazing, the flavor profiles complex yet so simple. The chef was so friendly and you could see the passion in his face as he prepared each bite. The hostess was so friendly and accommodating for my wife. The atmosphere felt like it would had we actually been in Japan. They definetly earned each Michelin star and then some. I will remember thos experience for the rest of my life.

I came here for an omakase experience with high expectations, but unfortunately left very disappointed.
The dishes were quite average overall. Many pieces had an overwhelming amount of wasabi that completely masked the natural flavor of the fish. Only the sashimi stood out to me as genuinely good. Portion sizes were small, and considering the total cost—nearly $300 for two sets ($95 and $125) plus tax and tip—I didn’t feel it was worth the price at all.
More concerning was the hygiene and attitude behind the counter. There were two chefs. The chef on the left wore an apron and gloves, looking very professional. In contrast, the chef on the right wore neither an apron nor gloves at any point. In any professional kitchen, wearing an apron is a basic hygiene standard—not just for cleanliness, but also to show respect for the customer and the food.
Even worse, I saw this chef eating his own food from a paper bag while seated below the counter, clearly trying not to be seen. Then he returned to preparing food with bare hands. Even if he rinsed them, this behavior is simply unacceptable during an omakase service, where guests are trusting you with quality and care.
His attitude was also off-putting. He looked at customers with an unfriendly or annoyed expression, making the whole experience feel tense. I don’t know if there were internal issues among the staff, but it clearly showed in both his attitude and food handling.
This was not the omakase experience I hoped for. I cannot recommend this place to anyone looking for a refined and trustworthy dining experience.

Delicious omakase.

Standouts include the smoked salmon at the end with the shiso flowers, quail egg, and seaweed, the light layered butter cookie with the matcha ice cream, and the slightly charred sushi like the sea bream. The Wasabi that was served with the sashimi was refreshing and pleasantly salty. Loved the condiment.

Left the meal super full.

Slight comments:
The sushi rice was a little too mushy for me.
I’m not a fan of gold leaf on my food. Personally, I’d rather get more fish.

Worst Omakase experience of my life. Honestly we picked this place going by the reviews only to realise the management had changed recently. The rice used in sushi was actually warm which did not bode well with fresh fish. The omakase chef was barely audible and could not communicate with the diners, an absolute no go for a 150$+ experience. The fish was cut poorly and lacked freshness (at least 1-2 days old). My partner (who is Japanese) said she would not even get paid to eat here, which I think summarizes our experience. Even the green tea served was so bad. How can one get that wrong? Don’t get fooled by good reviews. Stay away!
