The food was surprisingly delicious, nice meat quality and they are cooked perfectly medium by the server.
There are multiple sauce choices so you can mix and match.
Highly recommend classic course for 2 people. We also added a beef tartar, it’s the best tartar I ever had.
The beef tongue and skirt beef are soooo good! Will definitely come back again.
This is our second time visiting. We tried the sampler menu the first time and found out which meat we liked.
Today we started with our top two choices: Flat Iron Steak & Outside skirt steak (marinated). Beef tongue was really good (thick cut and then cut into smaller cubes after grilling; served with flavored green scallions)
Our server, Vickie, was very friendly, attentive and cooked the meat very well table side. She also noticed when things need to be moved or refilled as well! 5 star service for sure!
Thank you and we will be back !
At the risk of overstating the superlative quality of OLHSO Korean BBQ in Downtown San Mateo, this might truly be the best Korean restaurant in the entire Bay Area—and certainly the best on the Peninsula.
Their Kalbi (Wagyu short ribs) are phenomenal, perfectly marinated and grilled to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The Kimchi pancake was easily the best I’ve ever had—better even than ones I’ve enjoyed while living in and visiting Korea. The pancakes are fluffy and savory a bringing out the best in the Kimchi favor without dominating the taste. The Chestnut Old Fashioned is a creative and delicious twist on a classic cocktail, and the bulgogi stands out with its subtle touches of japchae noodles and tteokbokki, adding both texture and personality to a familiar dish.
The atmosphere feels like a modern Korean fusion of style and casual comfort —somewhere between the energy of Japantown in San Francisco and an upscale Seoul lounge. Service was excellent throughout, and Andrew, the Korean American general manager, brought an authentic depth of knowledge and hospitality that elevated the whole experience.
Even the name OLHSO stands apart. Its Hangul spelling cleverly blends two ideas—one meaning “the whole cow” (a nod to its beef-forward menu) and the other a Korean slang expression meaning “right on” or “you got it.”
If you love Korean food, this is a must-visit. For Amex Platinum cardholders, the $100 quarterly RESY.com credit makes it an even easier decision to treat yourself.
Thrilled to see such an exceptional new Korean restaurant call San Mateo home—it truly feels like good fortune.
We had a complimentary salads and sides, really tasty. Overall food was one of the best we had and one of the best old fashioned. So we really enjoyed everything and this is our favorite place now.

Finally a proper high-end Korean BBQ in the Peninsula. San Mateo was gifted with Daeho a few years back but now OLHSO, a proper LA-style, premium BBQ experience. The interior is crisp and modern, the grills employ side sucking fans so no ugly smoke vents hanging, high ceilings… perfect for a date or business meal. The banchan, suaces, and the meat is presented in a delectable way, again, with plenty of attention to detail. This isn’t your regular Korean BBQ. And you’re in for a treat.
“Olhso” in Korean means “that’s right!” and yes, they get the meat right. Olhso also can be pronounced as “all 소(so)” which means every part of the cow. Witty double meaning there. You cannot have a premium bbq without fabulous meat. And every cut of the meat is marbled well, fresh, and high quality. I highly recommend you go with the set so that you can taste 8 varieties.
Every cut was tasty but the one that was most memorable was the tail. They slice the tail with the bone thinly and you have this “rib” like experience. Super chewy and tasty.
OLHSO also (ah, triple meaning now) has premium banchan and side dishes. Their kimchi is fresh and well made. Their kimchi and dwenjang jjigae is absolutely out of this world as they mix beef into the stew. Perfect amount of spiciness.
The only blemish was that the server who was grilling out meat kept on disappearing and due to the meat burning, we had to take over. Not sure if she was a trainee. But I can’t take a star away for this as other tables seem to be fine.
OHLSO hits all the right notes. It is so refreshing to see a modern high-end Korean BBQ, and absolutely legit, in the Peninsula. We really now need to think twice before heading down to Sunnyvale.
It isn’t cheap. But also you won’t feel “cheated”. (Are you reading this 10 Butchers?) Fanatastic addition to the Bay Area.
Pro Tip: Absolutely make reservations. There aren’t that many BBQ tables so you practically have zero chance if you walk in.
We visited as a family of 3 on Sunday, they do have high chairs/boosters.
No particular kids menu, but that was not a problem for us. Our 4yo is a big fan of beef and this place has all the cuts!
We ordered their classic combo since it was our first visit. The meats arrived in a display box and looked very fresh. The friendly staff grilled everything for us, all we needed to do was to pick up our chopsticks and eat.
Our favorite pieces were the flat iron steak and the beef tongue. The combo also came with 1 stew (we chose soybean tofu stew), which was plentiful and flavorful, a little salty but went super well with their fluffy white rice.
I love that they also provided us with 4 varieties of kimchi in the banchan sets, of course they come with endless refills.
We really enjoyed our experience there, and were already messaging friends and families to come with us again, while we were still eating
The portion sizes are pretty decent for the price. We liked the pork jowl a lot. The flank beef was good and tofu stew also good. The bonchon is very mid
I visited OLHSO House while in SF/San Mateo, and honestly… wow. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is next-level its sleek, modern, and super cool with image mapping on the walls that instantly sets the tone.
The staff was incredible and friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel special. The meat quality? Unreal. Every cut was insanely tender and packed with flavor. The shaved oxtail was the star of the night, but everything we tried was mouthwatering.
And the rice wine deserves its own shoutout — smooth, delicious, and the perfect pairing for the feast.
This place nails everything: food, service, ambiance. If you love KBBQ (or even if you’ve just been curious), this is THE spot to check out.
