This isn’t Tex-Mex, we like to call it Fresh Mex. It’s a style of Mexican food that’s layered, sophisticated in flavor, and completely original. We use all fresh ingredients, local wherever possible and make everything from scratch. We even roast our own chilies. Old Town Mexican Cafe southwest dishes have garnered numerous awards including Chef of the Year (2003, Key West Restaurant Association), Best Entree (2008, Key West Master Chefs Classic), and a People’s Choice Award (2009, Key West Master Chefs Classic).

Casual eatery creating a seafood-heavy menu of Mexican plates in tropical-themed digs with a patio.

We visited Old Town Mexican Café in Key West, and as vegetarians, we were pleasantly surprised by how many great options they had.

We started with chips and salsa, which were fresh and absolutely delicious. For our main course, we ordered enchiladas. They originally came with zucchini and squash, but we requested a replacement with only onions, bell peppers, and fresh diced jalapeños, and the staff happily accommodated our request at no extra cost. The red sauce was outstanding—rich, flavorful, and not overly spicy. The enchiladas were served with Spanish rice, which was also very tasty.

We also ordered vegetable fajitas, again customized with onions, peppers, and fresh jalapeños. They were incredible and came with six to seven tortillas, which was more than enough for two people. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned.

For our child, we ordered a side of Spanish rice, which she loved since it wasn’t too spicy. Because the red sauce was so good, we also ordered a side of rice with cheese and red sauce, and it was amazing—simple, comforting, and only $7, totally worth it.

Overall, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was fast and accommodating. Highly recommend this place, especially for vegetarians looking for flavorful and flexible options in Key West. ✨

Pretty mid, everything was lacking flavor and spice not what you’re looking for when you go to a Mexican restaurant.
The nachos and the carne adovada was the only thing that were ok/good.
The service was really good though, the girl that served us was really nice.
Such a shame we had high expectations.

Ahi tostada didn’t have quite enough tuna. But the chorizo fundido was very good just keep stirring it. First margarita was awesome. Second one was pure lime(sad)

Loved the food and the free range chickens roaming around. Unfortunately we were seated at a table serviced by the bartender – who was totally absorbed by the single customer at the bar. First time I’ve ever left what I consider a very poor tip… but i assume the customer at the bar getting all the attention and service would be leaving a huge tip. The food was great – and especially loved the meringue on the key lime pie, rather than whip cream.

Great food. I love the chickens wandering around the yard. It’s key west, you have to expect chickens. They say don’t feed the chickens, ignore them. Just do it when they are not looking 🙂

If you can handle hot, get the habanero salsa. The Tortilla soup is amazing. The salmon spinach enchiladas were amazing as well.

We will be back.

My wife and I had our wedding reception here in June and it was the most amazing experience! The owner Gail is so incredibly sweet and easy to work with, the staff is all so so amazing, and the food and drinks are delicious! They really went above and beyond to make sure we had the most special day. If you’re an easy going couple looking for an alternative to the traditional reception, I can’t recommend them more. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Good food and great service. Atmosphere was very good. First time I have ever had lunch while live chickens walked around my table. Will definitely return when I’m in Key West again.
