I came to Old Pueblo Cantina with high expectations given its top ratings and location.
Unfortunately you can tell most of the ingredients used here came canned or bagged from a supplier (probably Sysco).
I got the ceviche, chicken enchiladas, a cocktail, and the tres leches cake.
The ceviche was decent, nothing special, it leaned a bit too acidic and the shrimp was definitely a little chewy.
The cocktail was actually quite good–a mix of fresh fruit and balanced juices and tequila.
The enchiladas were a mixed bag. The chicken was decent and so was the corn used in the body of the dish. But the adobo rojo sauce–you could taste the canned tomato paste and it was really barely seasoned with anything other than salt…and the usage of iceberg lettuce on top was disappointing. Finally, the tres leches cake could hardly be called that. It was a simple white cake with whipped cream frosting and three slices of strawberry. It was entirely average and tasted fine, I guess. But not what I was expecting.
Overall, however, 13$ taco plates on Tuesdays, the friendly service and the cozy, well decorated interior save this restaurant from being a total bust. But if you’re looking for authentic, flavorful cuisine, look elsewhere.

Good food.

Visited a Saturday afternoon without a reservation. The restaurant was not crowded. Nice ambience.

We got complimentary nachos with a sauce – tasted amazing. Ordered a guacamole which was just right.

Got a delicious mocktail.

The mains were chicken skewers and beef nachos. Everything was seasoned well.

Will visit again.

Best restaurant experience I’ve had in a while!! My partner and I decided to stop in after we had passed the restaurant and noticed the “Home of the Cheese Crisp” sign. We were met by Carlos, the manager, who made sure we had a wonderful experience. Our server Ava was amazing, and great at making recommendations. We ordered the mini beef chimis, the fish tacos, and of course the cheese crisp, and they did NOT disappoint. The mini chimis were especially delicious. We will definitely be back!

Very average Mexican restaurant but it is popular in Chicago. It’s on lists where people are saying you must try.

We came here on a Friday around 5:30pm. There were three of us (1 child included). We had a reservation, and we were sat at a high table against the wall. It was very tight and we had to move the table to fit our small child on that side. The staff didn’t really help and seemed annoyed but other people also had to do this at other tables.

It was okay, I got a burrito, it had chicken, and grilled vegetables. Very average.

We also got the guacamole and my partner got the shrimp skewers which came with rice and beans. He liked it. He also got the elotes but it was in a bowl without any chips. He liked it.

I got a margarita and my partner also got one they were good not great.

My son got a taco.

There were a lot of kids in the place. The staff served politely and were mostly efficient.

I can’t believe the price, the quality of the food, or the fantastic service we received.

I ordered the mahi mahi, crispy shrimp, and carne asada tacos. They all were great (carne asada was a little bland for my liking), but I can’t stop thinking about how perfect the crispy shrimp was. Highly recommend!

We had the most wonderful dinner at Old Pubuelo — it has quickly become one of our favorite neighborhood spots! We brought our 10 month old, and they were incredibly sweet and thoughtful with him, which always makes a night out that much more special for parents.

Carlos, the manager, truly goes above and beyond — checking in, making sure everything was perfect, and creating such a welcoming atmosphere. Our waitress Brooke was absolutely lovely and so patient with our baby, which we appreciated more than we can say.

They recommended one of the appetizers for us and it did NOT disappoint — the mini beef chimis are chefs kiss! The food, service, and overall vibe were all top-notch.

If you’re looking for delicious Mexican food with genuinely kind people who make you feel like family, Old Pubuelo is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back again and again!

We came here for taco tuesday which is a great deal. Note that you can’t mix and match tacos on taco tuesday without paying the full price. We got the queso con chorizo which was amazing, shrimp tacos, and red chili beef tacos. The red chili beef tacos were a little bit too spicy for me. The chips and salsa are so amazing too!!

If you want authentic mexican food do NOT come here. Everything had NO flavor. The tampiqueña was $32 and came with 90% rice and 5 thin slices of meat. Why were the corn tortillas transparent?? The Al pastor came with little meat and big chunks of pineapple. The drinks were $5 each and took 3 sips and it was gone. The portions expect the rice was extremely small for the cost which is expensive! Waiter doesn’t come to check up on us at all either, when trying to order and pay the bill. I was left waiting for extremely long. If you like flavor and spices find somewhere else

This was my first time at Old Pueblo and I will definitely be going back on a regular basis. My boyfriend and I had such a great time. The food is very authentic, much flavor, and the homemade tortillas are the best we have ever had! All of the staff are so kind and friendly. The manager, Carlos spent much time chatting with us and made us feel so welcome. The bartenders, Tori and Ava were equally as friendly and helpful with drinks and the menu. It was an all around enjoyable evening at a well managed restaurant. We can’t wait to go back for some amazing Mexican food and to see the friendly and outgoing staff!

Cramped up space putting the tables with less than a ft. of separation. Drinks ok, service good, food simply terrible. Started with tuna tostadas no flavor at all not even in the spicy mayo that has underneath, cheap quality tuna and not even a sprinkle of citrus marinade or anything… Completely flavorless. Continued with a dried meat crisp as they market themselves as the house of crisps, expecting it to be great. Do not order it. Reminded me of a college snack when you put a tortilla in the microwave and sprinkled some cheese after one of those heavy parties. No taste at all… Had to order a guac and sour cream to try to make it better. Then the chimichanga; since we realized this place was underseasoning everything, we thought ok it’s just for that kind of market… Let’s have that instead of tacos. That was a bit better but still had to eat with extra salsa to get something from it. Definitely not recommend. I paid everything in my meal, did not complain and not asking for anything, left 20% tip plus the 3.5% service charge but please don’t believe that Google score.
