As Texans living in Seattle for a bit, we’ve been on a mission to find a legitimate Chicken Fried Steak. We drove over an hour and a half to Old Hwy 99 Bar and Grill, and it was worth every mile.
Texas is the gold standard for CFS—hand-battered, tenderized, and a quality cut of meat—and this is the best we’ve found anywhere near Seattle. We also had the Prime Rib, which was massive and delicious. Don’t skip the fried mushrooms (a Texas staple) or the sweet tea; it tastes exactly like Grandma makes it back home.
The atmosphere is spot on for a traditional Texas cafe. Low ceilings, friendly/sassy service, and that classic “local” feel where everyone looks up when you walk in. If you’re looking for a good CFS and an authentic Texas-style joint, this is the place.
P.S. We recommend getting the gravy on the side so you can enjoy the crispy crust of the CFS.

Great place in any kind of weather to enjoy a delicious meal indoors and out! We stopped in to try it out and were pleasantly surprised by all the seating choices! They have a big outdoor room with woodheat and a covered porch with heatlamps.
Our food was great!!! Fair prices and amazing staff.
Super cute decor, you have to stop in and see it for yourself.
As a bonus, they have outdoor dog friendly seating, too!

First appearance looks like a dive bar
Walk in and it’s more of a nicer cleaner brighter dive bar with fun pinball machines and an updated jukebox! (Blown away too that they sell cigarettes at the bar! Is that a Washington thing? Great marketing)
Head to the back it’s actually a beautiful well designed hipster like speakeasy. With outdoor seating, cute lights, warm fire pits!
Absolutely incredible hole in the wall! Would love to come here during the summer on a weekend and see how busy it gets
The food is FANTASTIC best sandwiches we’ve ever had! Gourmet status!
I wish we’d been able to try some cocktails but I can say my Arnold Palmer was perfectly balanced.
Definitely enjoyed this surprising experience!! I hope this place can franchise down to slo county in SoCal 😉

Took a while to order but I’d heard the fish and chips were good, so waited. Food arrived, looked decent, decent portions, fish was great, fries were stone cold. Waitress never returned, I paid and left. Not impressed.

We haven’t have a date night in awhile and my girlfriend picked old hwy 99 bar and grill because that had been our “spot”, and we loved the service and food was good. Last night we went there and the waitress with short grey hair took our order. Girlfriend ordered the bacon mac and cheese dinner and I ordered fried chicken. She asked if I wanted dipping sauce and I said yes please! 2 ranch and 2 honey mustard please! She rolled her eyes and me. We also ordered nachos and she sarcastically said ” you know it this big”. From that moment on we looked at each other and was thinking the same thing
…oh boy here we go!
20 mins later she came back with the nachos and with her thumb in the cheese and proceeded to casually wipe her thumb off and left. We were not about to thumb cheese nachos!
I had to go up to the other waitress and explained the situation. She said she would remake the order. That was fine. So another 10 mins and our food came out but…..my fires were ice cold and thet put the butter packets on top of my girlfriends “mac and cheese” more like penne pasta with cheap canned cheese sauce, and a knife stabbed into the dinner roll!! Wow that was not cool! Retaliation much?!

Great get together with old friend for a reunion! Cute outdoor area that kept us warm. Inside was busy but cozy. Service was slower but that easily could’ve been due to the crowd that night.

I love riding into this place for a true Paloma. Great blanco tequila and squirt! They put a shake of Tajins in the glass. Very friendly staff and really fair price.
