The place itself is very cozy and friendly. The portions are fair for their prices. I ordered the strawberry cakes and I ordered the banana chocolate ones to go. They were tasty and good at first, however, the more you eat it you can taste the egg in the pancakes. I would prefer something less eggy next time! I’m not a matcha drinker but the apple matcha drink they have is amazing!

OKAERI is known for its authentic and fluffy soufflé pancakes, which are described as a must-try dessert. The cafe offers a cozy dining experience but is very small. ☕
Self-service here. ♀️

Don’t be fooled by the spartan atmosphere. This is the real deal. Order the spam first. Yes, I know. You did not come here for spam, but it is unbelievably tasty. Then try the onigari curry. You will thank me. If you are into suffles, then order whatever you like. They are good.

Compared to the souffle pancakes I had in NYC years ago, what this place has in the DMV area is not bad. We got the matcha and strawberry souffle along with matcha latte. The matcha souffle has a mochi sheet on top.

I was really looking forward to trying Okaeri Japanese Cafe after seeing photos online and hearing some hype, but unfortunately, this visit turned out to be quite disappointing — especially for the price (spent about $50–60).
We ordered the matcha and purple sweet potato soufflé pancakes. The matcha was overly bitter, and the mochi layer on top didn’t add much. The purple sweet potato one was slightly sweeter, but lacked real flavor and didn’t pair well with the pancake base. Both soufflés were flat and lacked the signature fluffiness you’d expect.
I may have ordered the wrong flavors, because the original or strawberry ones might be better. I also saw the chocolate soufflé at a nearby table and it actually looked pretty good — maybe I just got unlucky.
I also tried the black sesame latte — very average, just a regular latte with sesame powder or paste.
The hojicha ice cream was the strangest combo: vanilla ice cream topped with hojicha tea. It didn’t blend well at all — kind of a mess, flavor-wise.
Lastly, I had the strawberry cream sandwich, which looked beautiful, but the strawberries weren’t sweet, and the cream squished out everywhere when I took a bite. It was honestly difficult (and messy) to eat, and the flavor didn’t make it worth it.
Overall, the presentation was nice, but the food really didn’t live up to expectations — especially for the price. I wouldn’t recommend it based on this experience, but maybe others have had better luck with different menu items.

The space is cute but small. I see many people had trouble finding tables during our time there. There’s 2 kiosks available to order or they can take your order at the counter as well. They call your receipt/order number when it’s ready and you can go pick it up at the counter.
I had their onigiri in the past, I thought it was okay. I know they now have curry/katsu rice but I haven’t had it. I mainly come here for their desserts. I like their soufflé pancakes, ube/purple potato is my favorite (but strawberry flavor is decent as well). Last time I went, they also served kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) and decided to try the ramune flavor. It was great! Not too sweet and really refreshing against summer heat.
Overall I really enjoy this place and their desserts. Just be aware of lack of dine in space when you go.

The katsu curry is very good. The rice was perfect. Onigiri is delicious. The strawberry soufflé pancakes were delicious with the perfect bouncy texture and not too eggy inside. The melon soda was good too.
There are 2 order kiosks. The curry came out within 15 minutes and the soufflé pancakes took 30 minutes. We came on a Saturday and it was very busy. You’ll be lucky to get a table.

The place is a bit small and have little decoration but its really cute and cozy. The staff were really nice and friendly despite the amount of people there. I got the strawberry sandwich, strawberry pancake and the match dorayaki. The pancake was nice a fluffy. The presentation was really pretty, perfect for taking photos. The pancake itself was not too sweet and soft. I really like the jam and whip creme on top. I wish they had given more of the topping since the pancake was a bit bland. Overall, this place is really good and a fun snack spot.

Years ago, during a visit to Canada, I stumbled upon Japanese souffle pancakes. When I returned to the States, I couldn’t find them anywhere. So, I was excited to hear that Okaeri had opened and was serving Japanese souffle pancakes!
They did not disappoint! Their pancakes are fluffy and soft, and you can choose from a variety of toppings. We also ordered drinks, which were delicious. The menu offers a diverse range of items.
The customer service is outstanding. However, the only downside is that the space is quite small. There isn’t much seating, and during most of my visits, I’ve struggled to find a seat.

Honestly I wanted to let you know almost everything we had taste like seafood/fishy taste and smell. Also another thing my cups were sticky like they were touching it with their dirty used gloves and or hands. I think you need to spend a little more time on cleanliness. What if I had a seafood allergy and was just coming for the pancakes? I would like to be completely honest. I only visited because of that TikTok we all saw. The pancakes look so beautiful so I had to try it. Taste ehhh was a honest 1 nothing special just aesthetically pleasing nothing more nothing less. Drinks were gross. We literally tried like 1 of everything off of the menu. If you want to go for the experience okay but I’m sure it’s overpriced because there’s no regulars. Oh yeah it is a tiny shop so you have to get there before it opens to ensure a table and food takes within 30-40mins if you come as soon as they open. If not I watched them put a sign that says Pancakes will be a 2hr wait while we were still eating. We gotta stop with these TikTok trends we see because they’re leaving us devastated after we try them out lol
