What to Order at Oh! Calcutta in Long Island City | Eater NY
Reviews
Ordered samosas, pepper chicken, okra, saag with lentils, and chicken vindaloo – everything was delicious! Spices seemed authentic and not overpowering.
The vindaloo was very spicy, hit the tongue like fireworks, and still had great flavor! The okra and pepper chicken were favorites! Garlic naan was so good too!
Recommended.
friend and i got lamb (rogan josh) and chicken kadai. both great, but my personal favourite was the stir-fry cabbage!
great place near the station here in LIC. would come back!
I began with the Gobi Manchurian (indo- Chinese style cauliflower appetizer). The portion size was underwhelming—just a handful of florets—and the taste was only average. What surprised me most was the use of whole green cardamom pods in what was supposed to be an Indo-Chinese dish, which felt out of place. Not terrible, but definitely not the Manchurian flavor I’m used to.
Next was the Murgir Jhol (Bengali home style light chicken curry), which was a bigger disappointment. I was expecting a comforting, home-style Bengali chicken curry with bone-in curry cut pieces, but instead received chewy, boneless breast chunks in a thick, oily gravy with a slightly burnt flavor. While I appreciated that there was a potato included (a staple in Bengali chicken curry), it was clearly boiled separately and added later, leaving it bland and disconnected from the dish. Overall, it didn’t capture the homestyle essence I was looking forward to.
This experience was not what I expected from a restaurant carrying the “Oh! Calcutta” name. Still, I may give it another try with different dishes before making a final judgment. For now, though, I left disappointed.
Update: I ordered from this place again, and unfortunately the experience wasn’t great. The fish fry was extremely basic — honestly, something I could make better at home. I did not like the dry chili chicken either; it didn’t resemble the Kolkata-style chili chicken at all. The chicken pieces were tough, and the flavor was completely off from what you’d expect if you’ve ever had the real thing in Kolkata.
The Kolkata-style chicken biryani was also disappointing. It tasted more like plain rice mixed with chicken curry rather than true biryani. I’ve had far better biryani from home kitchens. Overall, this round of food was not up to the mark.u
Authentic flavors and warm, welcoming staff made us feel right at home. The lunch special offers great variety: we had fish, chicken, and lamb, each served with rice or bread plus complimentary cabbage subji that transported us straight back to India.
For dessert, we sampled gulab jamun, mishti doi, and rasmalai – all equally delicious!
Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic Indian cuisine.
a) Food: Its a hit or miss here. Portions are fine but the food depends. We ordered a chilli paneer which was too sweet. Malai tikka was good. But the biryani was absolute disappointment. The name does not do justice. The chicken in the biryani has gone bad – smells. For the sake of my life we had to leave the chicken.
b) Service: Don’t start with this. They were in a rush to clear the plates. They cleared half completed Malai tikka serving plate. The servers, maybe, cannot hear properly. Things have to be repeated a couple of times. Even they didnt bring the check to me and I had to go to the counter to pay. I would give a negative star if possible.
c) Location and ambience: Location is actually pretty good. You can get an uber or just use the Subway and u would get here instantly. Just next to the subway. Ambience was fairly good, was pretty empty when we go there.
Overall: I would NOT recommend this place. You may try the malai tikka but as I said, be aware of the chicken, it might be bad.
We would’ve appreciated a bit more guidance through the menu highlights, especially since it was our first time trying this kind of food — but the dishes we tried were flavorful and satisfying. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the food was well-prepared. Definitely a nice spot to explore Indian/Bengali cuisin
