Off the Grid is a cafe, market and farm with outdoor seating on the Thornton River. We serve hand-made dishes for breakfast and lunch, some ingredients sourced from our farm or locally. Meats are always local and pasture-raised, eggs from our own hens or local pastures. Lots of vegetarian & vegan fare, as well as gluten-free options. Delicious cocktails, regional wine, beer on tap (growlers to go), and full espresso menu and house-made sodas! An eco-store is onsite with a selection of eco-friendly, fair trade or local products. Our operation is powered by a large solar array, we provide level 2 electric car charging, compost onsite and use natural farming practices. Just 5 miles east of the Thornton River Gap entrance to Blue Ridge Parkway!

Food was tasty and good. Service was great and fast. Price is reasonable. We got 2 menu items for lunch. But when we had taco bowl and fig Chicken. We see that Chicken in Taco bowl was not good ,(seems like old or spoiled). Chicken in Taco bowl Picture is. attached. Healthy can drink is served. Other meal was great

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while because of the great reviews, so I stopped in to grab a sandwich to go. I ordered the fig and chicken sandwich, which was $16 (chips were an additional $3.20), bringing the total to just over $20.
For that price, I was expecting something really special, and unfortunately it just wasn’t. The sandwich itself was pretty flavorless. The chicken tasted like basic deli chicken, there were only a couple small chunks of goat cheese, and somehow even the caramelized onions didn’t have any flavor. The only real flavor came from the fig jam, so it was just overly sweet with no complexity at all. It didn’t feel elevated enough to justify the cost.
To put it in perspective, you can get a pulled pork sandwich that comes with fries at Patty O’s in Little Washington, owned by a Michelin star chef, for $19, which made this hard to rationalize.
That said, the service was good and the atmosphere is very cute. I’m sure some of their other, possibly hot, dishes might be better, but based on this experience, I don’t see myself coming back.

A great place to stop for lunch on the way to Shenandoah National Park. The food is great, there is an outdoor seating area near a stream, and a mini store with some souvenirs and other things. A cool thing about this place is that it is actually off the grid, in the outdoor area, across the stream you can see solar panels. Definitely recommend this place when you are on your way to go to Shenandoah National Park.

We were so delightfully surprised by Off the Grid in Sperryville. After a great time camping at Big Meadows in the Shennandoah, we passed this great restaurant after leaving the park. Their focus on sustainability and on locally grown ingredients was impressive – and so were their pastries! The Thai Curry Bowl was absolutely fantastic, as was the Cauliflower Pizza (no, seriously, it’s a fantastic pizza, whether you’re into cauliflour crust or not). The fish plate is a build-your-own experience and the chili was hearty and savory, with only mild heat. We are excited to have found this great stop on the way to on of our favorite parks – we’ll be sure to stop by again the next time we are in the area!

The food was quite good! I pass this restaurant a lot when I go hiking. I heard they offer vegan food so I decided to try it out.
There’s just a few menu choices that are vegan, which is not unusual for Virginia. I chose the Mediterranean plate. When it was ready they mistakenly brought it to me in a to go box! They quickly took it back to the kitchen and righted the wrong.
The dish was really good, I cleaned my plate. It was fresh and delicious.

This place has fresh foods, made from scratch. The menu is regularly changed and has a real variety of dishes.
I think it’s tourist friendly, I really enjoyed the cold salmon and herring selection, with picked vegetables, really reminded me of Scandinavia, it’s a great place to get something a little lighter while your out and about hiking.

After a nice hike in the Shenandoah, we found this place on Google and came down for a late brunch. The outdoor seating by the stream in the back was particularly lovely especially on a nice day. Regular coffee was nice but the decaf was a bit watery. Food was generally nice, Penang curry rice bowl was delicious, chicken wings were nice; the smoked salmon and fish was a bit salty.

My group stopped in while en route back to Northern VA from Shenandoah. I actually liked this place. The food was good. The house made bagel was phenomenal. The pancakes were great. The shrimp bahn mi was good, it just lacked flavor. Overall, my group was pleased with the food. It was fresh. I like that it was locally sourced. The restaurant was quaint and charming.
The one star is really to bring attention to an incident that occurred when dining in. The water is self serve. There was a cup of bamboo straws next to the water dispenser. I got a cup of water for my partner. When she drank from the straw an earwig that was about an inch long dislodged into her mouth. She spit it out and was literally shaking from the shock of almost having swallowed it. I brought it to the staffs attention. The servers seemed concerned but the manager was rather dismissive saying “oh, she found a little bug in her water.” It was far from little. I wasn’t expecting anything out of the exchange. The food was paid for. There was just an overall lack of empathy. I told her she may want to check the water and definitely check/maybe dispose of the straws, as usually earwigs gravitate towards moisture and there may be more. The issue went unresolved. We were there close to an hour. When we left, same water, same straws on the counter.

Located by the river, they serve very healthy food. Tried the Greek plate and it was yummy. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to rejuvenate.
